Description
This person will function as a member of the Department of Surgery in the Division of General Surgery with the individual's major duties and responsibilities being in surgical oncology, as well as participation in general surgery call. The incumbent may provide educational and/or administrative services to hospital programs as delineated in School contractual arrangements.
Examples of Duties- A. Serve as Associate Program Director of the general surgery service in the administration of the general surgery training programs, selection of trainees, and other administrative duties.
- B. Assist with the administration of the Surgical Oncology Program including:
- 1. Supervision of program staff and personnel.
- 2. Representation of the program in Division, Department, School, and University-wide matters when delegated to do so by the Section chief, Division chairman or Department chairman.
- 3. Act as liaison between the oncology program and Division and local, regional, and national cancer control organizations such as the American Cancer Society.
- 4. Serve as a surgical representative in committees, tumor boards, and other activities in support of the Simmons Cancer Institute at SIU.
- A. Carry out delegated responsibilities concerning the instruction of medical students in the disciplines of General Surgery and surgical oncology as well as general medical care. This includes participation in and direction of formal rounds, conferences, and seminars; leadership and instruction during formal and informal ward rounds; and teaching of surgical principles during operative procedures.
- B. Act as a role model for the house staff and provide instruction during rounds, conferences, and in the operating room.
- C. Develop and implement student and resident curricular elements in surgical oncology.
- D. Develop and present continuing medical education programs for Central Illinois.
- A. Initiate and collaborate in research efforts in surgical oncology, to potentially include translational, outcomes, disparities, clinical trials, and for educational projects.
- B. Obtain extra- and intramural grant support for laboratory and clinical research.
- A. Provide a role model for students and residents by maintaining a practice of high quality in oncologic and general surgery.
- B. Provide consultative and/or diagnostic service to house staff and other physicians.
- C. Participate in assigned Department, School, and hospital committees.
- Sensitive to the needs of underrepresented minority populations.
- Board-Certified or Board-Eligible in General Surgery.
- Successful completion of a General Surgery residency.
- Successful completion of a Surgical Oncology fellowship.
- MD license in the State of Illinois.
The budgeted annual salary range is $350,000 to $385,000, representing the academic base salary only, which is funded through the University. The final academic base salary will be determined by a thorough assessment of available market data, internal salary equity, candidate experience and qualifications, and budget considerations. Additional clinical compensation will be provided separately through a member practice agreement
