Position Summary Plans, implements, and evaluates pre‑ and post‑anesthesia patient care and pain service patient care in a timely and accurate manner.

Position Requirements

Formal Education / Training

  • Earned a nursing diploma or degree from a college or university.
  • Licensed in the state of Tennessee.
  • Must respond to hospital within thirty minutes for "on call" requirements.
  • ACLS certification. If not currently certified, must obtain certification prior to taking call.
  • One year experience in PACU Phase 1 or 2, CCU, or Emergency Room.
  • BLS within 90 days of hire.
  • PALS within 90 days of hire.

Workplace Experience

Peri operative Care

Equipment and Skills Training

Standard patient care equipment for services provided. The ability to work well under pressure, to function dependently and independently and to be flexible in applying basic nursing knowledge to a variety of settings. Familiar with general area equipment and network computer system, Omnicell Medication System, Meditech Order Entry Computer System; AT&T Language Line, epidural pumps.

Physical Environment

A Post Anesthesia Care Unit/Holding Area with patient population ranging from less than one year of age to ninety‑nine plus years of age.

Physical Effort

  • Able to communicate in English verbally and legibly.
  • Able to stand/work for up to twelve hours a day.
  • Able to lift with assistance up to 250 lbs.
  • Able to transport patients with assistance.

Performance Standards

  • Performs a comprehensive assessment on all patients within the appropriate time of admission utilizing skills of observation, communication and examination.
  • Plans the patient’s care on an individual basis, identifying problems/needs, nursing diagnosis, standards of care/practice, interventions consistent with identified problems and attainable outcomes.
  • Collaborates with appropriate surgical team members to effectively coordinate the delivery of patient care in a timely manner.
  • Plans for and provides education, emotional and psychosocial support for patient and family.
  • Functions independently with treatments, procedures and equipment appropriate to areas evidence by adherence to policy, procedure and competency based assessment and no pattern or trend of problem.
  • Handles/ transports/ stores/ prepares/ administers medications/solutions safely and in accordance with hospital and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Documents accurately and timely.
  • Reassesses patient’s condition, evaluates patient response and modifies plan of care accordingly and in a timely manner.
  • Maintains healing and therapeutic environment for the patient and family.
  • Facilitates staff development and assists in helping train new staff.
  • Demonstrates responsibility for assigned communications and special assignments.
  • Maintains personal work area and appearance reflecting professionalism and the importance placed on cleanliness, orderliness, and safety.
