* Job Summary:

** Positions allocated to this classification are responsible to a designated supervisor for performing a variety of routine road maintenance and construction involving physical labor, the use of tools and the incidental operation of light vehicles. This position utilizes both automatic transmissions as well as manual transmission vehicles.
This position is required to obtain a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within 12 months of hire. Advancement from an Apprentice Road Maintenance Specialist to a Road Maintenance Specialist is determined by an affirmative recommendation of the department and receipt of a Class A CDL license.

* Job Description:

**** ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
*** The position is responsible for removing materials and cleaning roadsides, ditches, drains, drywells, culverts, etc. upon assignment or upon notice by personal inspection; alerts supervisor of needed repairs or road hazards.
* Performs hand ditching, patching, hole filling, leveling of surfaces.
* Assists others in their work by participating in that work not requiring a high degree of skills.
* Operates autos and pickups or other equipment and specialized tools as needed; transports equipment operators and supplies to and from work sites.
* Answers citizen complaints; makes repairs and reports complaints and results to supervisors.
* Safely operates equipment and tools.
* Performs other related duties as required.
** EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
*** High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
* Three (3) months of experience which demonstrates an ability to perform outdoor physical labor.
* Must be at least 18 years of age at time of hire.
* Possession of or the ability to obtain and maintain a valid State of Washington Traffic Flagging Certification within thirty (30) days of employment.
* Possession of or the ability to obtain a valid First Aid/CPR/AED card and must be maintained throughout employment.
* Possession of a valid driver's License at time of hire, with an acceptable driving record and for the duration of employment.
** KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
*** Knowledge of safety rules governing the use of road systems and vehicles and equipment operation.
* Skilled in communicating effectively both orally and in writing, sufficient to exchange or convey information and to give and receive work direction.
* Skilled in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with co-workers and supervisors.
* Ability to deal with citizens in an informed and courteous manner.
* Ability to carry out work without constant, specific or immediate supervision.
* Ability to perform medium to heavy physical labor for extended periods of time.
* Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide numerical data.
* Ability to demonstrate physical ability to complete any and all job related tasks.
* Ability to use and/or operate tools, equipment and applicable machinery proficiently and safely.
