Summary
The Police position is responsible for the operation, direction, and control of the law enforcement and physical security activities of a Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC), Health Care System (HCS), or Police Service (PS).
DutiesKey responsibilities include:
- Protect individuals from personal safety threats while enforcing laws and regulations.
- Respond immediately to potentially armed individuals during active threat scenarios.
- Address highly dangerous and active crimes in progress, making independent decisions to preserve life and property.
- Mitigate opportunities for assault, illegal entry, and theft involving protected information and property.
- Provide patrols by vehicle, foot, and/or bicycle.
- Respond to calls for police assistance, irregularities, and suspicious circumstances.
- Conduct asset protection during transport.
- Write comprehensive incident reports.
- Provide policing services across various jurisdictions with differing enforcement rules.
- Seek, detect, seize, and protect evidence and witnesses at incident scenes.
- Detect and intervene in criminal activity.
- Conduct investigative contacts/stops, exercising search and arrest authority, detaining witnesses, and apprehending suspects.
- Advise individuals of their rights (e.g., Miranda, Weingarten, Garrity) and protect constitutional and civil rights.
- Intervene to deescalate situations, determining force application.
- Transport prisoners to holding facilities and courts as needed.
- Conduct disaster response and recovery.
- Provide Basic Life Support (BLS) to injured personnel and coordinate additional emergency response.
- Coordinate search, rescue, and recovery for persons at high risk, including coordination with local police departments.
- Investigate incidents and mitigate further risk.
- Provide training on drug and contraband intervention.
- Intervene to deescalate suicidal behavior and prevent suicides.
- Prepare case files and testify in court regarding law enforcement activities.
Tours may vary and include 8-, 10-, or 12-hour shifts, depending on service needs.

RequirementsApplicants must meet the following conditions:
- U.S. citizenship.
- Successful completion of a background/suitability investigation.
- Possible drug testing (designated or random).
- Probationary period may apply.
- Selective Service registration required for qualifying males.
- Submission of a complete application package, including resume and transcripts.
- Completion of an online onboarding process and acceptable identification for pre‑employment requirements.
- Driver's license or state‑issued identification must be REAL effective May 7, 2025.
To qualify, applicants must meet the GS‑06 grade level requirements: one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS‑05 level. Experience must be documented with job titles, duties, dates, and hours per week.
Specialized experience includes:
- Maintaining order to protect life and property.
- Taking initial complaints.
- Interviewing witnesses.
- Securing a crime scene and conducting limited searches.
- Responding to emergency situations.
- Gathering information and preparing reports.
- Conducting routine patrol, traffic control, and traffic accident investigations.
No educational substitution is available at this grade level. Experience as a security guard or corrections officer is generally not qualifying.
Driver's License RequirementA current, valid, state‑issued driver's license is required. Photographs of the license are not acceptable. A copy may be required during interview or onboarding.
Firearm Qualification RequirementVA Police Officers must carry agency‑approved firearms while on duty. Applicants must achieve and maintain qualification with agency‑approved firearms in accordance with the Gun Control Act of 1968 (18 U.S.C. 922(g)(9)).
