Job Summary- Custodian 1 provides a safe, sanitary and clean environment to enhance the learning environment on campus.
- Duties include sanitation of restrooms, floor and window care, general cleaning of building interiors, surrounding areas, emptying garbage and recycling, and arranging furniture for campus events.

- Use and maintain assigned power equipment, hand tools, buffers, and other cleaning equipment for floors, walls, carpets, furniture, etc.
- Follow instructions for the use of chemicals and supplies.
- Perform cleaning activities within a reasonable distance from buildings, including removing snow or debris.
- Assist with maid services in housing if required.
- Strip, clean, buff, and apply floor sealer and floor finish to floors; vacuum and shampoo carpets.
- Clean and sanitize restrooms and associated fixtures.
- Clean, dust, and wipe furniture; sweep, mop, or vacuum floors; empty wastebaskets and trash containers.
- Wash walls and equipment; use ladders when required.
- Wash interior or easily accessible exterior windows; cleaning rags and dust mops.
- Assist with the setup of facilities for meetings, classrooms, conferences, events.
- Move furniture, equipment, supplies, and tools on an incidental basis.
- Process recycling.
- Lock and unlock assigned buildings; secure building when facilities are not in use.
- Workdays and shift times may vary to accommodate special events.
- The position may be physically demanding; candidates must pass a pre-placement physical.
- Successful candidate must pass a background check before beginning employment.
- Must comply with EWU immunization policy (MMR).
- Uniforms are provided by EWU.
- Position is covered by the Washington Federation of State Employees Collective Bargaining Agreement.
- After starting, required training via Canvas, including Workplace Belonging training by 31 March 2026.
- Must be authorized to work in the U.S.; no visa sponsorship available.
- Pre-placement physical test required.
- Hearing test required.
- Protective equipment such as gloves, goggles/face shield, ear plugs, respiratory protection, rubber boots are required.
- Ability to lift up to 25 pounds frequently, up to 50 pounds occasionally.
- Prolonged periods standing and walking; ability to climb stairs.
- Frequent reaching above shoulders, bending, kneeling, pulling, pushing.
- Involvement in receipt or accountability for university funds.
- Minimum age of 18.
- Physical ability to perform the job.
- High school diploma or GED.
- Ability to learn institutional custodial techniques and requirements.
- Excellent customer service skills.
- Team-oriented worker with flexibility to assist coworkers.
- Ability to work any shifts and days.
- Ability to read, write, and understand written documents.
- Responsive and flexible approach supportive of needs of students, faculty, staff, and public.
- Knowledge of maintenance and operation of various custodial equipment.
- Prior professional housekeeping or custodial experience.
- Institutional or industrial custodial experience.
- Able to work overtime/extended hours on occasion.
