* Job Summary:

** This position is responsible for assisting attorneys in the Prosecuting Attorney's Office, the Public Defender’s Office, or the Counsel for Defense by creating and drafting a variety of legal documents, preparing case files and reports and assisting in various phases of pretrial preparation, trials, hearings, meetings, arbitrations and/or other proceedings. The position allocated to this class must exercise discretion, maintain confidentiality, display a professional attitude, and deal effectively with potentially difficult clients and sensitive subjects.

Incumbents possess a basic knowledge of the judicial and criminal justice system and adhere closely to adopted legal policies and procedures. This classification differs from Paralegal 2 in level of supervision and complexity of assignment.

* Job Description:

**** ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS**(Job functions may vary depending on department and/or area or assignment).

* Creates and drafts court orders and various other legal documents under the supervision of attorney staff.
* Files legal documents; redacts police reports and drafts protective orders; drafts and enters scheduling orders; creates and drafts release orders; files motions and notes for hearings and other sensitive and confidential legal documents under the supervision of an attorney.
* Assembles and organizes attorney files.
* Inputs and updates information in the computer data base.
* Verifies by phone possible personal recognizance information.
* Presents for signature agreed orders and conforms and distributes copies.
* Records and tracks court calendar dates and deadlines.
* Assists in pre-trial and trial preparation, including organizing exhibits, scheduling witnesses, etc.
* Assists clients being held in custody with obtaining trial clothing and conducts visits in the County Jail to review police reports.
* Assists the investigator with duties including serving subpoenas and taking notes during witness interviews.
* Conducts initial interview with clients in custody, obtaining background information, possible bond or personal recognizance release information and information regarding the arrest and charge.  completing background information sheets and a criminal case interview sheet.
* Assists attorneys in representing indigent clients.
* Retrieves inter-office mail throughout the campus.
* Performs other related duties as required/assigned.
** EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
*** Associate’s degree in Paralegal Studies or possession of a Certificate showing completion of paralegal studies from an accredited college.
* Experience in a position, such as a paralegal, with a criminal justice agency or law firm requiring legal research and related job duties, may be substituted, year for year, for education.
* Possession of a valid Driver's License at time of hire and for the duration of employment.
** KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
*** Knowledge of the criminal justice system, and an understanding of an individual’s constitutional rights.
* Skilled in communicating effectively both orally and in writing, sufficient to exchange or convey information and to give and receive work direction.
* Skilled in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with Court personnel, attorneys, clients and the general public.
* Ability to maintain attorney files, court and interview schedules and case preparation with minimal supervision from attorney staff.
* Ability to communicate with a wide range of people.
* Ability to operate standard office machines, word processing equipment and computer data base programs.
