Civilian Traffic Crash Investigator/Public Safety Aid (Part-Time)Closing Date:

This is a part-time, non-benefited, year-round position, up to 20-25 hours a week.
The Town of Southern Pines is a growing service-oriented community with a population of approximately 16,000, seeking qualified candidates for a progressive and professional CALEA Nationally Accredited Police Department. The Southern Pines Police Department is a highly trained, professional organization that has embraced the concept of Community Oriented Policing.
Job Description and Typical Duties
Under the direction and oversight of the Operations Captain, the Civilian Traffic Crash Investigator/Public Safety Aid is a Part-Time civilian position which primarily responds to and investigates minor traffic accidents and completes DMV-349 accident reports. The Civilian Traffic Crash Investigator/Public Safety Aid will:
- Respond to the scene and investigate accidents involving minor collisions with no injury in accordance with standard policies and laws
- Assist patrol staff on traffic related calls for service, as requested
- Respond to disable vehicle calls
- Removal of abandoned or disabled vehicles
- Assist at special events or parades
- Performs other related duties as assigned
Education, Skills and Certifications
- High school diploma or GED required, with an Associate’s Degree (preferred)
- Must possess a valid driver’s license, and have a good driving record
- Experience working in law enforcement (preferred)
- Two years’ experience requiring: recordkeeping, public contact, interpretation of rules and regulations and investigation, preferably for a law enforcement agency (preferred)
- Good computer skills with the ability to operate software applications such as Microsoft Office, Windows Operating Systems and various computer software programs used in a Police Department as needed
- Eligible to obtain Division of Criminal Investigations (DCI) certification
- Ability to successfully complete the approved training course published through the North Carolina Justice Academy, and complete no less than four weeks (160 hours) of field training with an officer experienced in working traffic crash investigations
- Ability to testify as a witness in court
- Ability to speak clearly, distinctly, and politely
- Ability to operate assigned equipment and type accurately at an average rate of speed
- Ability to make minor administrative decisions in accordance with laws, ordinances, regulations, and departmental policies and procedures
- Ability to deal courteously and tactfully with the public
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees
- Willingness to keep current and actively seek new information, training and technology in the operation of technology used in a law enforcement environment
- Ability to maintain extreme confidentiality
- Must submit to an extensive criminal background investigation, physical and pre-employment drug screen
Working Conditions
- This position primarily works outdoors, or in a vehicle, in conditions pertaining to providing crash investigation duties.
- This position will require periods of indoor work.
- Working conditions can be stressful when dealing with crash scenes, citizens, and other non-emergency situations.
