Introduction

The State of Connecticut, Department of Developmental Services (DDS) – Southbury Training School – is recruiting a full‑time Skilled Maintainer, located in Southbury, CT.

Position Highlights

  • Full‑time, 37.5 hours per week
  • First (1st) shift
  • Monday – Friday
  • 7:15 am – 3:15 pm (Regular days off: Saturday & Sunday)

Purpose of Job Class (Nature of Work)
  • Perform skilled maintenance tasks and lower‑level duties in areas such as building and equipment maintenance, operational and remedial maintenance, and grounds care as a supervisor or specialized landscaping functions.
  • Assist qualified craft workers or other higher‑level employees in the trades areas.

Knowledge, Skill and Ability
  • Considerable knowledge of methods, tools, equipment, materials and procedures of the specific trade or work area.
  • Knowledge of maintenance problems and their proper handling.
  • Skills:

    manual and machine operations; interpersonal; oral and written communication.
  • Ability: follow written and oral instructions; utilize computer software.
Minimum Qualifications – General Experience
  • Two (2) years of experience in one of the following areas: one of the skilled trades, landscape maintenance or vegetable gardening, or operation of motor trucks or large buses.
Minimum Qualifications – Substitutions Allowed

Graduation from a vocational or technical school with a diploma indicating completion of subject requirements in a maintenance trade area may be substituted for the general experience.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Possession of a valid CT CDL license.
  • Experience in professional landscaping, operating lawn and garden equipment.
Special Requirements

Incumbents may be required to possess and retain appropriate current licenses, permits and/or certifications.

Physical Requirements
  • Adequate physical strength, stamina, agility and visual and auditory acuity.
  • A physical examination may be required.
Working Conditions
  • May be required to lift moderate to heavy weights and be exposed to dust, heat, noise, extreme weather and risk of injury from equipment or abrasive individuals.
  • May be required to complete an asbestos removal program consistent with EPA guidelines and use protective equipment such as respirators and safety goggles.
