Practical Nursing Instructor - Nights/Weekends - Southaven

The Practical Nursing Instructor is a night and weekend faculty position at the Southaven Campus for the Practical Nursing Program. The instructor provides students with instruction of the highest standards, evaluates student progress, assists in preparation of program documents and policies, and furthering institutional activities. The instructor communicates necessary information to students, provides academic advice, serves on committees, and assists in maintaining uniformity of the Practical Nursing program across all campuses.

This is a 12‑month faculty position reporting to the Director of Practical Nursing.

Qualifications
  • Graduate of an approved School of Nursing.
  • Unencumbered RN license in Mississippi and hold a minimum of an Associate's Degree in Nursing.
  • Three years clinical experience working as an RN; or two years' experience as faculty in a nursing/allied health program.
  • Meet clinical agency requirements (background checks, immunizations, CPR, etc.).
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Maintain health care specific requirements such as CPR certification, TB skin tests, and criminal background checks to satisfy affiliated clinical agencies.
  • Provide competent instruction in the clinical and theoretical areas of nursing.
  • Maintain high standards and promote excellence in education.
  • Participate in and contribute to the team‑teaching of classroom and clinical courses and model team‑enhancing behavior for students.
  • Serve as a role model for students in professional interaction with other health workers and with clinical facilities.
  • Promote positive and productive relationships with service area hospitals, clinics, businesses, industries, and agencies.
  • Assist in scheduling and confirming use of clinical sites.
  • Assist in scheduling curriculum content and classroom scheduling.
  • Maintain relationships with clinical sites and professional peers that support the reputation of the college and Practical Nursing Program.
  • Participate in professional development activities that support evidenced‑based practice.
  • Be prompt and punctual in reporting for work, in meeting classes, and in keeping office hours.
  • Collect, record, maintain, and submit accurate class records including grades, absences, withdrawals, and/or class drop information to appropriate offices.
  • Maintain attendance records for clinical groups and for classes taught.
  • Provide advice to the Lead Instructor, Practical Nursing Director and the Dean of Health Sciences on matters pertaining to the instructional program.
  • Provide assurance that the Practical Nursing Program is uniform across all campuses.
  • Serve on College, Division and Nursing Staff committees as needed.
  • Evaluate the progress of students in all classes according to instructional, divisional, departmental, and individual criteria.
  • Prepare or assist in preparing materials such as course syllabi, program outlines, articulation, and bulletin materials.
  • Participate in scheduled in‑service activities.
  • Promote student development through enrichment and mentoring experiences.
  • Serve as academic advisors and mentors.
  • Become familiar with institutional policies and procedures outlined in the College Bulletin, Policy Manual, Faculty Handbook, and Practical Nursing Program Student Handbook and follow such policies and procedures.
  • Perform all other professional duties as assigned by the Dean of Health Sciences, PN Director, or other administrative personnel.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Ability to take initiative to solve problems.
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail.
  • Experience using technology including email, word processing, spreadsheet, database, presentation software, and Internet use.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to interact tactfully and courteously with students, faculty, staff, and the general public.
  • Ability to collaborate with others and work as part of a team.
  • Quick study to quickly grasp and retain knowledge of policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrate oral and written communication skills to interact with a wide range of diverse individuals.
Physical Demands and Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the Practical Nursing Instructor regularly required to do the following:

  • Stand for long periods.
  • Talk, hear, view, and assist students.
  • Effectively communicate with others in person, telephone, zoom, and live chat.
  • Sit, use hands to handle or feel, and reach with hands and arms.
  • Stand, walk, stoop, or kneel.
  • Occasionally lift and/or move items of at least 15–20 pounds.
