An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and motivated Band 6 Deputy Sister/Charge Nurse to join our Paediatric Critical Care team.

Band 6 Deputy Sister/Charge Nurse posts provide opportunities to include rostered shifts across PCCU, Outreach and Retrieval services as negotiated between the post holder and the Senior Nursing Team, upon completion of appropriate competencies.

Post holders will be expected to work a minimum of 23hrs per week across days, nights and weekend shifts.

Main duties of the job
  • Provide clinical leadership to ensure a high standard of individualised nursing and family‑centred care is delivered to critically ill children.
  • Work as a member of a multi‑disciplinary team, communicating effectively with all levels of medical and nursing staff.
  • Uphold PCCU’s Nursing Philosophy of Care.
  • Effectively manage PCCU on a day‑to‑day basis, in the absence of a Senior Sister/Charge Nurse.

Senior Nurses within PCCU at Band 6 and above have the opportunity to work across the retrieval and outreach services in addition to PCCU on a roster basis, upon completion of appropriate competencies.

Paediatric Critical Care (PCC) at OUH includes 17 co‑located Level 2 and 3 critical care beds and delivers specialist services to patients from Oxfordshire, the wider Thames Valley and Wessex Paediatric Critical Care Operational Delivery Network (TVW PCC ODN). We are a leading Neurosurgical and Major Trauma Centre with a breadth of medical and surgical specialities. The unit is undergoing exciting estate and workforce development and investment, with a move into a newly built unit within the next five years.

SORT Retrieval Service delivers the SOUTHAMPTON OXFORD RETRIEVAL TEAM (SORT) in collaboration with Southampton across the TVW PCC ODN, staffed by doctors, ACPs and nurses from both Oxford and Southampton with a 24/7 retrieval team.

Critical Care Outreach Service supports all healthcare professionals in the assessment and management of unwell children across the children’s hospital, emergency department, and neonatal unit, following up and supporting children and families after discharge.

Education, Development and Training is provided through a structured competency‑based programme. We are piloting an in‑house PCC L3 specialist course for nursing staff, and clinical and leadership career development pathways are available. A growing team of Advanced Clinical Practitioners works across PCCU and SORT services at OUH.
