Position: Advanced Dietitian (Cystic Fibrosis)

Overview

Advanced Dietitian (Cystic Fibrosis) – 0.6 wte (22.5 hours per week) on a fixed term basis to cover maternity leave. Closing date: 03 February 2026.

University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to offer a fantastic opportunity to work with us. This role involves providing advanced dietetic services to adults with cystic fibrosis within the Wessex CF Service, supporting inpatients and outpatients across a wide geographic area.

You will be part of a friendly multidisciplinary team of dietitians, specialist nurses, physiotherapists and doctors, delivering care to CF patients and contributing to service development.

Job responsibilities
  • Be responsible for the specialist provision of a dietetic service to adult cystic fibrosis patients, providing complex nutritional assessment and dietetic advice.
  • Work in a variety of clinical settings including acute medical wards, outpatient clinics, annual reviews and occasional MDT home visits.
  • Attend and provide input to CF multidisciplinary clinics and meetings.
  • Provide complex nutritional assessment and support to CF patients including management of nutrition support, gastrointestinal problems, diabetes, liver disease and CF-related bone disease.
  • Work with an experienced team of CF dietitians including the CF dietetic team lead and band 6 and 7 CF dietitians.
  • Be a key member of the multidisciplinary teams working closely with the medical team, specialist nurses, physiotherapists, pharmacists, psychologists and social workers, and liaise with teams at other hospitals.
  • Provide educational talks on the importance of nutrition in CF to inform patients, nurses, doctors and students.
  • Continued professional development is actively encouraged; there will be opportunities to be involved in service development and regular audits.
  • Be involved with the supervision and support of junior dietitians and dietetic assistants as well as student training placements.
What we're looking for

We are looking for someone who has a keen interest in nutrition in cystic fibrosis, with evidence of relevant, strong clinical skills. Knowledge and experience of working in CF would be an advantage, but training will also be available. Previous clinical experience in nutritional support, pancreatic disease, respiratory or diabetes are highly desirable. This post would suit someone who has previously worked at a band 6 or 7 level in these specialties and is looking for a new challenge.

Flexibility, prioritisation and the ability to manage a busy, complex caseload are important. You must have excellent communication skills and an empathic nature to help patients manage their long-term condition and be aware of the psychological impact.

You will be organised and well-motivated, demonstrating an ability to act as a senior member of a multidisciplinary team.
