Support Worker & Driver for Visually Impaired Professional
Self-Employed – 4 Days per Week (Mon–Thu)
Seeking a compassionate and reliable Support Worker to assist a visually impaired professional working in a charitable organisation. This role involves both administrative support and accompanying the individual to off-site client meetings. The position is for 28 hours per week, Monday to Thursday with occasional evening/weekends or over-night stays further afield. The position is offered on a self-employed basis.
Southampton Sight is a local charity providing a lifeline to blind and partially sighted people. We work with around 1,200 people every year, providing emotional support, practical assistance, and expert information and guidance. We offer a ‘one stop shop’ for people living with sight loss with everything they need all in one place at our community centre based in Bassett Avenue, Southampton.

Reports to:Sight Loss Advisor
Key Responsibilities- Providing one-to-one support in the workplace including:
- Help with general office duties as required, such as photocopying, filing etc.
- Assist with scheduling, diary management, and basic IT tasks.
- Note taking when required during appointments
- Typing up dictated notes etc.
- Reading letters and correspondence where necessary
- Proofreading outgoing correspondence and documents as required
- Completing forms when necessary
- Helping to set up before talks / training etc.
- Helping to operate assistive technologies and liaise with IT support when needed.
- Drive to off-site locations (mileage reimbursed at 45p per mile) and ensure safe navigation in unfamiliar environments.
- Accompany and guide the individual during travel to client meetings and events.
- Always maintain confidentiality and professionalism.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Good level of spoken and written English
- Patience, empathy, and discretion.
- Good organizational and time management abilities.
- Basic IT proficiency with Microsoft Office suite e.g. Word, Excel, Outlook.
- Full UK driving licence and access to a reliable vehicle.
- Willingness to travel locally, occasionally nationally.
- Previous experience in support work or working with people with disabilities is desirable.
- DBS check required (or willingness to obtain).
- Sighted guiding training can be provided if needed.
- Ongoing support from the charity team.
