Financial Controller

Based in Southampton, Hampshire the business operates in a property-led, operationally complex environment and is known internally for the quality of its assets, long-term thinking, and commitment to reinvesting in both its estate and its people.

They are now looking to appoint a Financial Controller into a pivotal number two role within finance. This would suit either an experienced FC looking for a hands-on leadership role, or a high-calibre finance professional stepping into their first Financial Controller position where team development and influence genuinely matter.

What will the Financial Controller role involve?

• Leading the day-to-day operational finance function across a multi-site business

• Managing, developing and motivating a finance team of circa 10, with around five direct reports

• Taking ownership of team structure, workflows, deadlines and performance management

• Acting as a visible finance presence across the wider business, building strong relationships with operational, commercial and support teams

• Driving a more commercial mindset within finance, encouraging the team to understand the business beyond the numbers

• Playing a key role in forecasting, budgeting and forward planning across the group

• Ensuring robust financial controls, accurate reporting and timely delivery of management information

• Overseeing statutory reporting and liaising with external advisors

• Contributing to ongoing finance systems improvement within a live operational environment

Suitable candidate for the Financial Controller vacancy:

This role is first and foremost about leadership and influence. They are keen to meet candidates who can demonstrate:

• Proven experience managing and developing finance teams, including coaching, objective setting and performance management

• A strong technical accounting foundation, with confidence owning core finance processes

• The ability to step back, see the bigger picture and engage commercially with the wider business

• A hands-on, pragmatic approach, comfortable operating in a fast-moving, operational environment

• The presence and credibility to act as a trusted deputy to the Finance Director

Applicants stepping up into their first FC role are very much encouraged to apply, particularly those coming from a Finance Manager or Senior Finance Manager background with clear people leadership experience.
