The RoleA Level 3 Automotive Technician at the National Vehicle Distribution (NVD) Southampton Workshop typically operates within their Vehicle Preparation Centre (VPC). Unlike a standard retail garage, this role focuses on high-volume, high-standard preparation and technical rectification of new vehicles (including brands like BYD, Maxus, and Omoda) before they reach dealerships.
Key Responsibilities- Advanced Diagnostics & Rectification:
Using computerised diagnostic tools to identify and resolve complex mechanical and electrical faults, especially on vehicles that fail their initial Pre-Delivery Inspection (PDI). - PDI & Technical Campaigns:
Carrying out comprehensive inspections, safety recalls, and manufacturer-led software or hardware "campaigns". - Specialised Technical Tasks:
Executing ADAS Calibration (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems), EV battery replacement and 4-wheel alignment using specialist workshop equipment. - Operational Excellence:
Adhering to Lean methodologies (e.g., 5S) and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to ensure consistent quality and efficiency across high-volume throughput. - Team Leadership:
Mentoring junior technicians or apprentices and leading small teams (typically pairs) to meet "Standard Hour" targets for specific jobs.
- Formal Certification: A recognised Level 3 light vehicle technician (or equivalent City & Guilds/IMI) is mandatory.
- Experience:
Proven experience in a professional automotive workshop;
Main Dealer or large-scale vehicle logistics experience is highly advantageous. - Licensing: A full, valid UK Driving Licence is required to move and test vehicles within the facility.
- Technical
Skills:
Proficiency in using modern diagnostic software, hand tools, and workshop machinery. - Flexibility:
Ability to work shifts, which may include evenings or weekends (up to 6 days a week during peak seasons).
