Job PurposeThe French Speaking Field Guide leads and facilitates immersive guided game drives within the natural and cultural environments of Kwa Zulu Natal’s Zululand District. The role involves providing expert knowledge and interpretation to enhance visitor experiences, ensuring safety and engagement throughout each excursion. The guide communicates fluently in French to accommodate French-speaking guest, delivering high-quality service aligned with company standards.
Key Responsibilities- Conduct guided tours across designated regions, sharing detailed information on local wildlife, ecology, geography, and cultural heritage.
- Communicate effectively in French, providing clear and engaging commentary tailored to diverse visitor groups.
- Ensure the safety and well-being of all visitors during expeditions by adhering to established health and safety protocols.
- Assist with the planning and organisation of daily tour itineraries and activities in collaboration with management.
- Respond promptly and professionally to visitor enquiries, offering exceptional customer service and support throughout the experience.
- Maintain and monitor equipment and vehicles used during tours, reporting any faults or issues immediately.
- Stay informed of current environmental and conservation issues affecting the region, incorporating this knowledge into guided commentary.
- Contribute to the development and improvement of tour content, ensuring relevance and educational value.
- Maintain accurate records of tours conducted and visitor feedback for reporting purposes.
- Fluent proficiency in French and English, with excellent verbal communication skills in both languages.
- Valid field guiding certification or equivalent recognised qualification.
- Current driving licence, preferably with experience driving in rural or off-road conditions.
- Any FGASA qualifications accepted
- Minimum of a secondary education certificate or equivalent.
- Additional qualifications in tourism, ecology, environmental science or related fields are advantageous.
- Proven experience working as a field guide.
- Demonstrated experience guiding French-speaking guest.
- Experience in wildlife interpretation, conservation or environmental education is preferable.
- Comprehensive knowledge of local flora, fauna, geography and cultural history relevant to the Zululand District.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage and educate diverse audiences.
- Excellent organisational and time management abilities.
- Ability to remain calm and make sound decisions in challenging or emergency situations.
- Proficient in using navigation tools and basic first aid techniques.
- Customer-focused mindset with a commitment to delivering exceptional visitor experiences.
- Additional language skills beyond French and English.
- First aid certification or higher-level emergency response training.
- Experience in sustainable tourism practises and environmental stewardship.
The role requires working outdoors in variable weather conditions, including exposure to sun, wind and rain. The Field Guide will spend extended periods walking or driving in rugged terrain and must be physically fit to undertake these activities. Work hours are primarily full-time and may include weekends, public holidays and occasional early mornings or late evenings to accommodate tour schedules. The role demands adaptability, resilience and a genuine passion for nature and cultural heritage interpretation.
