Starke Ayres is the foremost African specialist and global supplier of premium vegetable, flower and lawn seed varieties – both for commercial and home garden planting. The following position has become available for a Research Field Assistant, based in Kempton Park.

• Collect seed from the seed store and arrange as per planting lists
• Correct numbering of seed for production, breeding, and screening programmes
• Correct filling of trays with growing medium
• Supervise labeling of trays
• Supervise sowing of seeds
• Ensure optimal germination conditions
• Organise treatment of trays/seedlings before planting

• Measuring out land space for planting
• Preparation of land/beds with irrigation
• Building tunnels/onion cages
• Assisting with planting and ensuring proper documentation
• Monitoring and controlling weeds during plant growth
• Assist with fertilization and irrigation
• Supervise trellising and plant maintenance

• Scouting and reporting insect infestations and disease symptoms in seedlings
• Prompt reporting of plant health issues to breeders/farm manager
• Organising treatment of affected seedlings/trays
• Scouting for insect infestations during plant growth cycle
• Monitoring and reporting overall plant health
• Derouging (removing off-type plants)

• Assists farm manager, breeders, and production department with day-to-day operations
• Supervises correct labeling, sowing, and planting processes
• Ensures research and production activities are carried out efficiently
• Coordinates grow-out evaluations, disease screening trials, and trials at different locations

• Assistance with Farmers’ Day demonstration blocks

• Grade 12 National Senior Certificate (essential)
• Tertiary Qualification (preferential)
• Driver’s License Code 8

• Minimum of 3 years’ experience as a research supervisor

• Plant Production:
  Techniques and equipment for planting, growing, harvesting, and handling plant products
• Languages:
  
  English (basic and applicable knowledge), Zulu (basic and applicable knowledge)
• Numeracy:
  Basic Mathematics
