Instrument Reliability Engineer

Job Summary

The Marathon Los Angeles Refinery, located in Carson and Wilmington, California, is seeking an Instrument Reliability Engineer to lead instrumentation reliability initiatives and improvements at the site. The primary function of this position is to ensure all field instrumentation and/or analyzers are designed, installed, maintained, and operated such that they perform with the highest degree of reliability. This includes justifying and budgeting for planned equipment replacements, troubleshooting existing issues, implementing new solutions and creating new reliability programs targeting longer run-times and safer operations.

The position requires a large amount of teamwork, collaborating and interfacing with all departments of the refinery, as well as various corporate entities.

The hours of this position would be Monday - Thursday, 10 hours per day, after hours calls are required on average a couple times a month and support of TAR once a year. Core Business hours are: 6:30 AM- 4:30 PM

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Work collaboratively with multiple disciplines to analyze instrumentation failure trends, conduct detailed root cause analysis; recommend and implement appropriate corrective action to maximize equipment availability and reliability.

  • Identify bad actor assets which impact production/reliability through the Threat Neutralization program. Identify and implement appropriate corrective action.

  • Design instrumentation improvement strategies to effectively close gaps and ensure alignment with long-term operational objectives, corporate specifications and conformity with industry standards and best practices.

  • Provide technical assistance/troubleshooting assistance in resolving instrumentation and analyzer design, operation, and maintenance problems; contact internal and external experts as required.

  • Utilize reliability tools such as failure evaluations, Root Cause Analysis, and cost analysis to improve reliability of instrumentation and analyzers.

  • Write recommendations for equipment upgrades including financial justification (life cycle cost analysis) and assisting in project development.

  • Develop and review turnaround work lists and scopes for instrumentation and analyzers.

  • Lead multi-department investigation teams to solve recurring instrumentation failures.

  • Initiate and champion Management of Change process for instrument upgrades and modifications.

  • Utilizes available tools to identify, quantify, and analyze reliability threats, and measure reliability improvements (AMS, SAP, PI, SPI)

  • Develops PM tasks and intervals for all mechanical integrity covered equipment consistent with industry and company standards.

  • Develops and maintains written procedures, checklists, and acceptance forms for testing and documenting that equipment performs correctly.

  • Education, Experience and Skills

    Minimum Qualifications

  • Must have a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related Engineering Degree. (Education must be obtained/completed prior to start date)

  • Must have a minimum of 4 years of post-degree Electrical/Instrumentation Engineering experience in the refining, petrochemical or other heavy related industry.

  • Must have good interpersonal and collaboration skills.

  • Must be proficient in Microsoft:
    Word, Excel and Outlook.

  • Must be able to wear appropriate PPE in the refinery (respirator), be able to physically perform all tasks in the field and take hair drug test and physical. Must be able to work outside in an industrial setting, including walking and climbing ladders.

  • Must have a valid driver’s license. (MPC determines valid status.)

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the US without the need for future VISA sponsorship.

  • Travel Requirement is 5% or less.
