Senior Optical Engineer

We are looking for a highly skilled Senior Optical Design Engineer to take the lead in designing world‑class optics for our cutting‑edge space products. • Lead the optical design of NSS products from concept through full product lifecycle
• Use Zemax or similar tools for design, optimisation, and tolerancing of optical systems
• Conduct trade studies to support informed design decisions
• Collaborate with the Project Manager to plan and manage integration, qualification, and testing
• Simulate and test designs to ensure robust performance with adequate design margins
• Serve as Technical Lead during development and Design Authority throughout the product lifecycle
• Ensure adherence to systems engineering standards and the internal Business Management System
• Identify, report, manage, and mitigate technical risks
• Define clear, comprehensive optical system requirements
• Represent NSS in client discussions on requirements and proposals
• Mentor and support Design Engineers and Intern Engineers

• A BSc or BEng degree from a recognised institution
• Additional training in Optical Engineering or Optical Design is an advantage
• 5+ years’ experience in similar role

• Proficiency in optical design software (Zemax, Code V, or equivalent)
• Strong understanding of geometrical and physical optics
• Experience with optical tolerancing, optimisation, and performance simulation
• Knowledge of optical materials, coatings, and manufacturing processes
• Ability to perform trade‑off analyses and technical feasibility studies
• Experience with system engineering principles and requirements development
• Understanding of integration, verification, and qualification testing
• Familiarity with space environment constraints (thermal, vibration, radiation) is advantageous
• Ability to interpret and create technical documentation, drawings, and specifications
• Competence in data analysis, modelling, and technical reporting
