POSITION SUMMARY
The Water Technician III/IV works under the direction of the Water Manager to maintain, install, and repair water utility equipment in accordance with maintenance schedules.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES Exercises water valves, repairs and/or replaces.- Locates and verifies placement of all water valves.
- Cleans out valve boxes.
- Exercises valves by opening and closing them.
- Repairs and/or replaces valve and/or valve box as needed.
- Maintains necessary records for maintenance management.
- Unscrews all nozzles, greases the threads, and replaces caps.
- Exercises gate valves by opening and closing them.
- Unscrews caps to allow water to flush freely from the fire hydrant.
- Repairs and /or replaces hydrants as needed.
- Maintains necessary records for maintenance management.
- Uncovers the water line.
- Evaluates the problem and identifies a solution.
- Closes water valves to shut down extra flow of water, if needed.
- Obtains appropriate repair supplies.
- Repair leaks, possibly while under water pressure.
- Replaces road base and prepares the site for asphalt paving in accordance with City specifications.
- Repairs or changes out water meters, recording new and old information (meter numbers, usage readings, and other information requested by utility billing).
- Determines size of water main required and obtains appropriate supplies, or verify proper materials are used and installation is completed in accordance with applicable codes.
- Uncover the ground where the line is to be located and prepare the bedding with compacted sand or other appropriate base, and verifies proper grading, if needed.
- Installs, chlorinates, and tests (pressure and coliform) water line or oversees the completion of the process.
- Installs new service lines and/or water meters, as needed.
- Pulls water samples in accordance with State requirements and submits them to the approved testing lab.
- Backfills trench according to City specifications and places lines in service.
- Meets with business owners to determine where and how water is used.
- Notifies owners of corrections and/or backflow devices required.
- Tests city-owned backflow assemblies and repairs and/or replaces, as needed.
- Reviews backflow test results and notifies supervisor of concerns.
- Cleans tanks and reservoirs.
- Tests water sources monthly.
- Monitors businesses for possible discharge of hazardous materials into the water supply.
- Monitors well sources and county connections to determine adequate water production.
- Obtains necessary permits and plans.
- Mixes and injects many different chemicals used to clean potable water wells.
- Extracts and neutralizes chemicals after cleaning.
- Sanitizes well after cleaning.
- Pulls water samples per State requirements and submits them to the approved testing lab.
- Obtains an operating permit before using the well.
- Any water department personnel may be assigned to assist with reading meters, if necessary.
- Graduation from high school or GED equivalent, plus some specialized training in a closely related field, or any equivalent combination of related education and experience.
- Must possess a current Utah State Water Certification Grade 3 or 4 or can obtain within one year.
- Must possess a valid state driver's license with Class A CDL endorsement (including Tanker endorsements) or can obtain one within six months of employment.
