DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF WORK
Under minimum supervision performs assignments that are non‑routine and require a variety of guides, references, and precedents; performs site surveys for road and bridge construction projects; performs technical and specialized complex inspections; may act as lead worker for a surveying party; handles paperwork required by county, state and federal government for all township and county road and bridge projects; oversees the preparation of project plans and designs.
ILLUSTRATIVEEXAMPLES OF WORK
- Designs and drafts plan and specifications from surveying, rough sketches, and notes from which workable drawings for construction projects can be made.
- Performs field surveys to establish lines, grades, horizontal and vertical alignments from which construction drawings, specifications, and bidding documents can be made.
- Prepares comprehensive and specialized complex technical engineering reports, memoranda, letters, and recommendations drafts orders concerning evaluations, construction programs operation standards, safety requirements, and service standards.
- Writes, evaluates, and analyzes specifications and construction practices and procedures to ensure compliance with the guidelines, proposals, and bids; describes characteristics of materials involved and the workmanship desired.
- Provides general technical assistance to other engineering technicians; may be responsible for a surveying party collecting information on a construction project.
- Supervises level I & II technicians and makes day‑to‑day work assignments.
- Works with utilities in relocating their service lines along county and township road projects.
- Assists township highway commissioners in planning their yearly road programs.
- Performs other duties as required or assigned.
- Uses, maintains and updates GIS databases.
Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to at least two years of college with a concentration in mathematics, engineering, or a closely related field.
Experience- Requires at least two years of experience working as an engineering technician II, in a closely related area, or equivalent education with relevant experience.
- Requires extensive knowledge of geometry, advanced algebra, and trigonometry.
- Requires extensive knowledge of drafting principles and techniques including the use of CADD.
- Requires extensive knowledge of engineering measuring devices instruments, and sampling equipment.
- Requires extensive knowledge of the principles and practices of engineering.
Requires possession of a valid Illinois Class A Driver’s License.
Significant Abilities- Requires the ability to use engineering equipment, instruments, and devices.
- Requires the ability to write plans, proposals, and reports and to draft designs and maps.
- Requires the ability to direct the work of others as a crew leader.
- Requires the ability to establish and maintain working relationships with co‑workers, professional people, public officials, and the general public.
- Requires the ability to communicate effectively with township highway commissioners, municipal public works and other county employees.
- Requires the ability to explain engineering projects and concepts to co‑workers, professional people, public officials, and the general public in layman’s terms.
