Summary of PositionResponsible for the delivery of safe, effective, and quality patient‑family centered care in the operating room and other perioperative areas for all patient populations. The perioperative RN provides professional nursing care to patients in the surgery departments, including Lake Tahoe Surgery Center, utilizing established policies and procedures to ensure safe and effective care. Duties include functioning as a circulating nurse, assisting the surgical team during procedures, and accurately following policy.
Services are delivered based on the ages of the population served as defined by each department’s scope of services and in collaboration with the multidisciplinary care team. The RN demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to identify and meet the individualized needs of all patients served in surgery departments.
- Completion of an accredited Nursing program.
- Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (BSN) preferred.
- Previous OR experience highly preferred.
- Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment, and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
- Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.
- Proficient computer skills for documentation and communication within the electronic medical records system.
- Effective communication in English; bilingual abilities preferred.
- CA RN license required if California is the primary home department; obtain a Nevada RN license within 6 months.
- NV RN license required if Nevada is the primary home department; obtain a California RN license within 6 months.
- Current CPR/BLS certification by the American Heart Association (BLS for the Healthcare Provider) required.
- ACLS certification required; new graduate RN must obtain ACLS within 6 months.
- PALS certification preferred.
- Certified Perioperative Nurse (CNOR) preferred.
- Frequently required to walk, stand, sit, talk, or hear.
- Occasionally required to use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms.
- Occasionally required to climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
- Specific vision abilities required: close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
- Lifting, positioning, pushing, and/or transferring patients up to 50 pounds.
- Routine hospital/healthcare and office/administrative conditions.
- Contact with patients and guests under a wide variety of circumstances.
- Regularly exposed to risk of blood borne diseases and infectious and contagious disease.
- Exposure to hazardous anesthetic agents, body fluids, and waste.
- Subject to hazards of flammable and explosive gases.
- Subject to varying and unpredictable situations, including emergency or crisis situations.
- Subject to pressure due to irregular hours, frequent interruptions, and stressful situations from multiple demands.
- Occasional travel to various health system locations.
- Provides consistently exceptional care at all times.
- Provides patient care, evaluates outcomes, consults with others as required, and adjusts care plan to ensure optimal care.
- Accurately and safely administers sedation/analgesia, monitors patients’ responses, ensures patient safety during procedures, and documents according to policy & procedure.
- Performs systems assessment at designated intervals on all assigned patients, recognizing disturbed physiology and abnormal parameters.
- Assesses pain levels on all patients.
- Assesses patients and develops individualized perioperative patient care plans.
- Medication administration is safe, accurate, and timely.
- Monitors patient reaction to physician orders; reports any untoward change in patient condition to appropriate individuals and reports patient status concisely.
- Recognizes unusual conditions outside of expertise and seeks guidance from coworkers or supervisor.
- Functions as a circulating nurse.
- Accurately communicates with surgical technologist regarding implants and documents this information in the implant log; collaborates on implant/explant logs.
- Monitors and ensures accuracy of documentation in patient medical record.
- Orients, instructs, and trains assigned personnel.
- Demonstrates knowledge of regulatory and licensing standards and ensures compliance.
- Performs environmental services duties, including cleaning of the operating area.
- Maintains required competencies.
- Responds to department needs by performing other duties as necessary.
