Overview
The Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) safely provides basic and advanced respiratory care services throughout the hospital, according to established policies, procedures and protocols.
Responsibilities- Provides consistently exceptional care at all times.
- RCPs are one of the first responders in all emergency situations to maintain the patient's airway while performing high level life-saving measures, including emergent resuscitation and ventilatory stabilization.
- Participate on Code Blue team, Code C-Birth team, and Rapid Response team.
- Integrate patient diagnostic data, response to therapy, and the physiologic profile to create a plan of care in collaboration with the multidisciplinary care team.
- Performs pulmonary mechanics on all eligible ventilated patients.
- Maintains proficiency on all aspects of operation of the mechanical ventilators and equipment used in the department.
- Collects specimens, performs basic procedures and assists in complex diagnostic procedures such as bedside pulmonary function tests and therapeutic bronchoscopies.
- Establishes and maintains basic and advanced forms of mechanical ventilation including NPPV.
- Assists in providing in-house transport of the ventilated patient.
- Collects appropriate data and presents patient information at daily Multidisciplinary Rounds, discusses treatment options (e.g., ventilator care plan) as it pertains to the patient, and communicates this plan to the physician and/or appropriate members of the patient care team.
- Interprets diagnostic and monitoring data with a high degree of competence (e.g., arterial blood gas sampling).
- Applies new techniques and procedures with high proficiency within days of training/orientation on new procedures, processes, and equipment.
- Maintains basic and advanced certifications for patients from neonate to adult; remains proficient in neonatal intubations.
- Assumes responsibility for self-development through continuing education.
- Performs other related duties as assigned or requested in a professional manner by the multidisciplinary team.
- Education:
Completion of an accredited Respiratory Therapy program. BS in Respiratory Therapy preferred. Quarterly Neonatal education required. - Experience:
Minimum one year experience in acute care as a Respiratory Care Practitioner preferred. - Certifications/Licensure:
Current NBRC RRT;
Current California RCP license;
Current CPR/BLS;
Current ACLS, PALS, and NRP (or enroll and complete the first available Barton University courses); STABLE preferred; NPS and/or ACCS preferred. - Physical Demands:
Standard physical requirements; ability to lift up to 50 pounds. - Working Conditions:
Routine hospital/healthcare environment; exposure to blood borne and infectious diseases; exposure to airborne/droplet hazards; handling of hazardous agents; emergency or crisis situations; irregular hours; occasional travel.
