Overview

Beck Construction & Excavation is seeking an experienced Fleet Lead CDL Driver to help lead our growing truck fleet. This is a hands-on role for a skilled driver who takes pride in safety, compliance, and teamwork. The Fleet Lead CDL Driver supports our field crews by operating trucks, coordinating drivers, and ensuring all vehicles and documentation meet Beck’s high standards of professionalism and reliability.

Job Summary: The Fleet Lead CDL Driver is a senior-level, working lead position responsible for overseeing Beck Construction & Excavation’s truck fleet and CDL drivers, while also serving as an active driver. This role ensures all company trucks are operated safely, maintained properly, and represent Beck’s standards of professionalism, reliability, and quality on every job.

The Fleet Lead CDL Driver coordinates daily assignments, monitors maintenance and inspections, and supports compliance with FMCSA and DOT requirements. Acting as the primary link between drivers, mechanics, and leadership, this role helps streamline communication, reduce downtime, and promote accountability across the fleet.

This position requires advanced driving skills and versatility with multiple types of trucks and transmissions, along with the ability to mentor and guide other drivers. The Fleet Lead CDL Driver plays a key role in building a safety-focused, dependable, and high-performing driving team that reflects Beck’s core values on the road and in the field.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Operate CDL trucks safely and efficiently to haul materials, transport equipment, and support active construction projects.
  • Coordinate daily driver assignments, routes, and hauling priorities in alignment with project schedules and site needs.
  • Ensure all drivers complete accurate and timely pre-trip and post-trip inspections and maintain proper documentation.
  • Promote accountability for truck care and cleanliness, ensuring all vehicles are fueled, serviced, and presentable at all times.
  • Monitor and assist with maintenance scheduling, repairs, and inspection compliance; communicate needs with the mechanic and leadership team.
  • Verify that all trucks and drivers comply with FMCSA, DOT, and company safety standards, including driver timecards and DVIR’s
  • Serve as the main point of contact for the driver team, providing guidance, problem-solving support, and communication between drivers and management.
  • Mentor and train new or less experienced drivers, reinforcing proper hauling, dumping, and safety procedures.
  • Encourage teamwork and professionalism across the driver group, addressing issues constructively and promoting Beck’s core values.
  • Maintain accurate delivery, mileage, inspection, and maintenance records as required by company policy and DOT regulations.
  • Communicate proactively with the superintendent, foremen, and project managers regarding delivery times, material loads, and changing project needs.
  • Communicate regularly with the Fleet Coordinator to support documentation and compliance record keeping.
  • Report accidents, near-misses, vehicle damage, or unsafe conditions promptly and in accordance with company policy.
  • Participate in safety meetings, toolbox talks, and fleet coordination meetings as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support safe, efficient, and professional fleet operations.
Skills and Qualifications
  • Expert-level proficiency operating a variety of Class A CDL trucks, including manual transmissions up to 18-speed.
  • Strong understanding of FMCSA and DOT regulations, including hours-of-service, inspection, and load securement requirements.
  • Proven ability to lead by example — maintaining professionalism, safety, and consistency across all driving operations.
  • Effective communication and leadership skills with the ability to coordinate, motivate, and support a team of drivers.
  • Demonstrated ability to recognize, document, and communicate mechanical or maintenance issues accurately and promptly.
  • Solid understanding of safe loading, hauling, dumping, and material handling procedures for a variety of job types and site conditions.
