Salary: GRADE 9 $ 22.14 - $33.91 Hourly (salary will normally begin at the first step of the range, dependent upon education and experience)
General DescriptionUnder the supervision of the Fleet Manager, performs apprentice‑level skilled duties related to the maintenance of all City vehicles and heavy equipment. Monitors maintenance schedules, purchases, and disposition of all City vehicles and equipment.
Examples of Duties(These examples are not all-inclusive)
- Schedules maintenance and repair of equipment with the various departments and maintains communications with clients on repair status.
- Performs diagnostics, preventative maintenance, and repairs on a wide variety of city vehicles and equipment, including lube and oil changes, tune‑ups, and all other mechanical repairs.
- Assists with implementing and monitoring a preventative maintenance program to assure cost‑effective maintenance and a scheduled maintenance program to provide maintenance by manufacturers' specifications.
- May weld, replace parts, repair parts, repair electrical systems, diagnose vehicles for minor body repair, and perform fender work.
- Examines reports for accuracy on each vehicle and piece of equipment repaired; writes reports on vehicles and equipment repaired. Makes monthly reports to the Highway Patrol on State inspections.
- Maintain vehicle maintenance records.
- Ensures efficient operation and productivity with the fleet department by reviewing repair times and costs to learn efficiency.
- Responsible for customer relations with all user departments.
- May assist with the development of all fleet specifications.
- May coordinate surplus equipment sales with all City departments.
- Assists with the Finance department to ensure all vehicles and equipment are accurately assigned and tracked in Fixed Assets.
- Assume other responsibilities and complete other tasks as requested.
- A high school diploma, or equivalent, is required
- Lube technician and light mechanical work experience preferred
- Coursework and certification in auto and equipment mechanics at a trade school is preferred, or willing to get certified
- Experience or knowledge in installing emergency lighting on police and public works vehicles preferred
- ASE certifications preferred
- 1‑5 years experience in auto mechanics is required
- 1‑3 years experience in Municipal Fleet Repairs preferred
- Must possess a valid Utah Driver's License with a good driving record
- Must possess a Utah Commercial Driver License (CDL) or obtain one within six (6) months of hire
- Must be at least age 18
- Ability to remain calm and professional in difficult situations
- Ability to be flexible and adaptable to changing priorities
- Excellent time management skills required
- Positive attitude and ability to work with a variety of different people at various levels
- Good skills in Word, Excel, and Outlook required
- Must be proficient with email and the internet
- Must be able to work evenings, weekends, and some holidays when needed
- Must have strong oral and written communication skills
- Must be highly self‑motivated and customer‑centric
- Must have excellent customer orientation, multi‑tasking, and analytical skills
- Required to have strong team interaction skills and problem‑solving skills
- Required to have excellent decision‑making skills
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors and other employees
- Must be able to operate all office equipment
- Must be able to use equipment and tools needed to perform job duties effectively
Successful candidates must pass a pre‑employment drug screen, a background and driving record screen, and provide employment verification with Form I‑9. This position has a six‑month probation period.
