Job DescriptionThe Occupational Therapist I evaluates referred patients to plan and implement comprehensive treatment programs. Responsibilities include discharge planning, patient and family education, and follow-up or continued care recommendations. This position documents evaluation results and services provided in accordance with hospital and department guidelines.
The Occupational Therapist I participates as a member of a self-directed departmental team and an interdisciplinary patient care team. The role involves providing clinical instruction to OT and OTA students, as well as training and education to department and hospital staff.
Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Hire- Licensed (or licensure eligible) by the Commonwealth of Virginia as an Occupational Therapist
- Completion of licensing requirements for new graduates within 1 year of graduation
- Maintenance of licensure once granted
- Current CPR Certification if required by clinic or practice area
- New graduate to up to 2 years of experience as an Occupational Therapist
- Expected to progress to Occupational Therapist Clinician II level within two years of employment at VCUHS
- Previous affiliation or work experience at a similar facility
- Required:
Graduate of an accredited School of Occupational Therapy - Preferred:
Masters or Doctoral Degree from an accredited School of Occupational Therapy
- Evaluation and treatment of patients with routine diagnoses
- Setting schedule and managing time
- Reporting in interdisciplinary rounds
- Goal setting for routine diagnoses
- Completion of routine documentation
- Interaction with the interdisciplinary team and self-directed work team
- Customer interaction
The Occupational Therapist supervises Rehab Technicians, COTA staff, volunteers, and students on clinical rotations.
Additional Requirements- Cross-coverage to other treatment teams as needed
- Progression to Clinician II status within 2 years
- Saturday/holiday coverage on a rotating basis
- Flexibility in work hours as needed
As appropriate based on unit assignment.
Physical and Other Requirements- Physical:
Lifting 50-100 lbs, frequent bending, walking, climbing, reaching - Mental/Sensory:
Strong recall, reasoning, problem solving, hearing, speaking clearly, reading, logical thinking - Emotional:
Ability to work in a fast-paced, noisy environment, handle multiple priorities, and adapt to change
