Job OverviewThe Physical Therapist I is primarily responsible for delivering physical therapy care to the assigned patient population and documenting this care in the hospital medical record.
The therapist acts as a consultant to various patient clinics, provides instruction to PT support staff, students, personnel from other disciplines within VCUHS, and patients and/or their families. Therapists may rotate through various clinical service areas.
Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Hire- Licensed (or licensure eligible) by the Commonwealth of Virginia as a Physical Therapist
- Current license by the Commonwealth of Virginia as a Physical Therapist
- Current CPR Certification if required by clinic or practice area
- Required:
New graduate to up to 2 years of work experience as a Physical Therapist; expected to progress to a Physical Therapist Clinician II level within two years of employment at VCUHS. - Preferred:
Previous affiliation or work experience at a similar facility.
- Required:
Graduate of an accredited School of Physical Therapy. - Preferred:
Masters or Doctoral Degree from an accredited School of Physical Therapy.
- Patient evaluation, implementation of care plans, discharge planning, ordering equipment, representing the department at rounds and discharge conferences, scheduling, and charging patients.
May supervise Physical Therapist Assistants, Rehab Technicians, students, and volunteers. Operates as part of a self-directed team, applying knowledge and experience to daily problem solving. Unresolved issues are escalated to the departmental manager.
Additional Requirements- Share in weekend and holiday schedules or have a flexible work schedule from 8 AM to 7 PM based on patient needs.

Physical and Mental Requirements- Physical:
Ability to lift 50-100 lbs, frequent bending, walking, climbing, reaching. - Mental/Sensory:
Strong recall, reasoning, problem-solving, hearing, clear speech, legible writing, reading, logical thinking.
This position is primarily in acute care settings. Standard hours are Monday to Friday, 7:30 AM - 4:00 PM, with Saturday and holiday rotations required.
