Phlebotomy
Performs phlebotomy functions and non‑technical duties in areas including the hospital laboratory, outpatient and off‑site services.
- Performs phlebotomy (venipuncture, finger stick, and heel stick) according to established procedure.
- Uses correct venipuncture technique with minimal patient discomfort.
- Performs finger stick when venipuncture fails.
- Performs heel stick on newborns with correct technique.
- Identifies patients and labels specimen tubes accurately.
- Verifies patient identity, records specimen details, and determines STAT priority.
- Ensures timely transport of specimens to the laboratory.
- Draws STATs within 10–15 minutes of request and trauma/disaster specimens immediately.
- Utilizes computers for patient registration and order entry without errors.
- Generates and manages collection lists, including adding or canceling tests.
- Organizes workload, aids colleagues, and communicates with laboratory departments.
- Assists colleagues with blood‑drawing on morning rounds and reports missed patients.
- Provides training and resources to new employees under supervision.
- Follows all departmental policies, safety training, and exposure control plans.
- Demonstrates proper body mechanics and safe equipment operation.
- Maintains a clean work area, correct biohazard disposal, and appropriate safety dress.
- Shows respect, professionalism, and confidentiality toward patients and staff.
- Presents a neat appearance and adheres to hospital identification policies.
- Participates in staff meetings, committee work, and continuous customer service initiatives.
High school diploma or equivalent required.
Minimum Work ExperienceOne to six months phlebotomy experience required; at least one year acute‑care hospital experience preferred.
Required Licenses/Certifications- Current California CPT I or CPT II License.
- Current Basic Life Support Certification.
