Position Overview
South Dakota Wildland Fire is seeking motivated individuals to work as part of an engine crew for the Custer District Office for the 2026 fire season. Crew members staff a type‑6 engine and respond to fires locally, regionally, and nationally. The role involves working on fires with exposure to burns, smoke inhalation, heat exhaustion, and hazardous materials. Employees perform emergency operations in rough terrain, under extreme stress and heat, and around loud aircraft.
Duties- Suppress wildland fires statewide and nationwide.
- Participate in presuppression activities (equipment maintenance, fuel reduction projects, fire prevention).
- Engage in fire training and prescribed burning projects.
- Pass the arduous work capacity (pack) test: 3‑mile walk carrying 45‑lb pack in 45 minutes or less.
- Be at least 18 years old on date of hire.
- Hold a valid driver’s license.
- Work holidays, weekends, and rotating shifts.
- Complete a pre‑hire drug screening.
- Have or obtain S130/S190/L180 & I‑CS 100/700 certifications.
- Provide wildland fire boots (minimum 8‑inch high top, leather lace‑type, skid‑resistant soles). Boot reimbursement up to $400 upon receipt.
Engine crew members must develop knowledge of fire‑suppression tactics and terminology. Responsibilities include holding, mop‑up, ignitions, chainsaw operations, and mobile/stationary engine operations. Candidates must lift 75 lb, perform strenuous physical labor, maintain equipment, and operate 4×4 vehicles with automatic or manual transmissions. Ability to work independently is required.
Other InformationThe Custer District Office is located in the heart of Custer State Park. Seasonal service period mid‑May through October, with possible early or late shifts depending on fire activity. Seasonal employees are paid hourly and may receive per diem for meals and lodging when traveling or working away from the duty station.
Housing may be available upon request in Custer State Park.
