The Nursing Assistant (NA) serves as a caregiver to residents during the scheduled work period in long‑term care. They provide resident‑centered nursing care and daily living assistance under the supervision of a registered nurse (RN). The NA delivers age‑appropriate care related to the physical and psychological needs of residents as per the care plan, follows infection prevention and control policies, and uses personal protective equipment.
Key duties include bathing, toileting, grooming, dressing, recording vital signs, and providing psychosocial support. The NA assists with mobility, transfers, and range‑of‑motion exercises, prepares food and dining experiences, and encourages participation in wellness and recreational programs. Administrative responsibilities encompass documenting resident interactions, reporting changes in condition, collecting body fluid specimens, and maintaining housekeeping and laundry services.
Qualifications- High school graduate or GED preferred, but not required.
- Minimum age of 16.
- Prior clinical or nursing assistant experience in long‑term care preferred.
- Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification required; must be obtained within four months of hire or be enrolled in an approved training program.
- Completion of yearly competency testing and maintenance of continuing education (minimum 12 hours annually).
- Certifications required by state and department.
- Registration with the Unlicensed Assistive Person (UAP) Registry, if applicable.
- Possible classification as a Sanford Category II Driver; requires valid driver’s license, vehicle report, and medical qualification.
