Historic Facility Manager — Oklahoma Route 66 Museum
Oklahoma Historical Society, Clinton, OK

Basic Purpose

The Oklahoma Historical Society is seeking a Historic Facility Manager to direct and supervise daily operations and staff at the Oklahoma Route 66 Museum in Clinton, OK. Necessary skills include long-range and disaster planning; budgeting; supervision and financial accounting for educational programming, gift shop operations, and special events; oversight of scheduled and emergency maintenance and historic restoration projects; general oversight of museum collections management;

fundraising; building and maintaining cooperative relationships with local community, and strong interpersonal skills to reach a diverse audience and staff.

Key Duties
  • Directs the operations of the Oklahoma Route 66 Museum; develops and administers budgets, goals and objectives.
  • Determines need for new programs in areas of collections and interpretive exhibits; identifies and resolves problems; consults with senior curatorial staff and exhibits personnel and other staff to seek and implement solutions to problems or plan new programs or activities.
  • Works with administration and the Friends of the Oklahoma Route 66 Museum support group to plan special events and exhibits to promote the facility, including media exposure, brochures, posters, films, informational publications and other public relations and public service programs.
  • Assures the facility is open and properly staffed during operating hours; supervises and trains assigned staff and volunteers.
  • Oversees building and grounds maintenance, responsible for collections and management of use fees and admissions and sales receipts and for all fiscal property.
  • Provides for the safety and security of the Oklahoma Route 66 Museum, collections, and visitors and staff.
  • Maintains positive relationship with the Friends of the Oklahoma Route 66 Museum support group.
  • Develops productive relationships with Route 66 advocacy groups within Oklahoma and throughout the United States to engender goodwill, raise the profile of the museum, and serve as a resource for historical knowledge and programming.
  • Museum Store oversight and financial management.
Education And Experience

Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of a master’s degree in history, anthropology, museum studies education or a closely related field and three years of experience as a curator, administrator, registrar or exhibit designer/coordinator in a museum or historic site; or a bachelor’s degree in history, anthropology, museum studies or a closely related field and four years of experience as curator, administrator, registrar or exhibit designer/coordinator in a museum or historic site;

or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, And Competencies

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities required at this level include knowledge of basic math; of cleaning and maintenance for buildings and grounds; of American and Oklahoma history; of collections management and care; of basic research methods; of collections management and care; of the Secretary of the Interior’s Standard for Archaeological and Historic Preservation as appropriate to the site or museum; of applicable state and federal laws regulating historical collections and operations;

and of principles and practices of supervision. Ability is required to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; to organize groups of people; to delegate tasks and monitor performance; and to assess the condition of buildings and collections.
