SummarySupervisory Dietitian (Clinical Nutrition) Employees in this assignment are experts in clinical nutrition and oversee a complex Clinical Nutrition Section, providing administrative and technical supervision of clinical dietitians.
Qualifications- United States Citizenship:
Non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. - Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) or Registered Dietitian (RD) – must be registered with the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR).
- English language proficiency in spoken and written English in accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7403(f).
- Grade determination: GS‑13 supervisory dietitian. Experience equivalent to GS‑12 (one year of experience).
- Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs):
- Skill in written communication, including policy development and standard operating procedures.
- Skill in strategic planning to develop goals, objectives, and action plans.
- Skill in analyzing data to monitor progress toward improving and sustaining outcomes.
- Ability to negotiate.
- Ability to supervise subordinate staff (plan, organize, delegate, direct, control, and review activities and performance).

- Operate within a model with three core elements – a personalized health plan, healing relationships and environments, and community connection.
- Provide clinical nutrition section‑specific leadership; serve as a professional and technical advisor to staff and other health‑care professionals.
- Oversee HR staffing, employee relations, and labor relations in the Clinical Nutrition section.
- Exercise comprehensive supervisory and personnel‑management authorities; plan, direct, and assess the work of subordinate staff.
- Establish a training plan for the clinical section based on evidence‑based nutrition.
- Develop and lead clinical nutrition operations.
- Establish strategic goals and ensure priorities align with the strategic plan of the NFS department, VISN, and national programs.
- Lead performance‑improvement efforts within the Clinical Nutrition section – act on quality‑improvement data and plans.
- Identify and prioritize problems; set long and short‑term goals; develop action plans and analyze data to evaluate progress.
- Develop and update policies and procedures; oversee regulatory compliance systems.
- Solicit support and negotiate with facility managers to influence decision making and garner support for clinical nutrition operations.
- Collaborate closely with supervisory dietitians to cover work in all NFS and execute department activities.
- May perform other related duties as assigned appropriate for this grade and assignment.
Full time – Monday to Friday, 7:30 am to 4:00 pm. Telework is ad‑hoc if approved. Not a virtual position.
