Responsibilities
  • The Advanced Practice Professional (APP) has coordination and clinical skills required for the comprehensive management of orthopedic patients, including biological, social and psychological assessments. The APP coordinates involvement of medical/surgical specialty teams necessary to develop a comprehensive plan for the patient, reviews the plan of care with other members of the clinical team, participates in directing that care, performs diagnostic/therapeutic procedures, peri-operative services, and coordinates discharge planning/follow-up (as applicable).
  • Participates in the education of residents and medical/nursing students.
  • Provides healthcare services consistent with state law and the requirements of the professional licensing or certification authority and/or hospital privileges, where applicable. Such service may include, but is not limited to, the statements listed in the job description.
  • Manages comprehensive and individualized care for orthopedic patients and their families in the inpatient phase of hospitalization and immediate post-discharge and in the ambulatory setting.
  • Performs daily rounds; conducts pre-procedure evaluations; participates in peri-operative patient care (including first assisting in the operative suite as applicable).
  • Completes integrated assessments; orders additional tests or consults as deemed appropriate in collaboration with orthopedic faculty or per established guidelines and protocols.
  • Performs and communicates results of diagnostic tests following established clinical guidelines and scope of practice.
  • Collaborates with clinic and hospital staff regarding abnormal findings and coordinates follow-up procedures and tests in the ambulatory setting as applicable.
  • Documents plan of care, interventions and evaluations in the medical record following hospital policies and compliance standards.
  • Oversees discharge planning and coordinates services necessary for outpatient follow-up appointments in the clinic (as applicable).
  • Promotes education for patients, families, nursing staff, hospital staff, students, and the community; participates in teaching and program development; serves as a resource person for staff caring for orthopedic patients.
  • Provides leadership in developing and implementing changes in orthopedic practice that positively impact patient outcomes.
  • Works collaboratively with medical and nursing staff to facilitate problem solving and professional support; participates in interdisciplinary approaches to patient care, program development and education.
  • Documents hours and submits billing reports as appropriate and participates in data review and quality improvement efforts.
  • Participates in clinical trials and research studies with the Principal Investigator and assists in outcome measure collection as applicable.
Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR NURSE PRACTITIONER

  • Graduate of a CCNE accredited nursing program with Master’s Degree in Nursing.
  • National Certification by one of the recognized APRN Certification Centers.
  • Licensure, or eligibility for licensure, as a professional Registered Nurse and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in West Virginia.
  • CNOR Certification.
  • BLS Certification required with additional Advanced Life Support training at the discretion of the department.
  • Department Specific: APRNs requesting to be privileged as First Assists in perioperative services will be required to complete an ANOR approved CNOR Certificate program and obtain a passing grade on CNOR certification exam.
