Lieutenant Kirkland Correctional Institution, Columbia; RICHLAND Level 3

Responsibilities

• Under general supervision, plans, coordinates and directs the actions of the security staff and oversees security, custody, and control of inmates in RHU max.
• Maintain security of all RHU max buildings and property.
• Maintain a logbook off all incidents occurring during shift.
• Supervise the use, accountability, and control of keys and other related security equipment.
• Preform security and post checks.
• Monitor the operation of the control room.
• Direct and supervise an inspection program to detect and correct deficiencies in security, safety, sanitation, and maintenance of RHU max.
• Instruct, train, assign, and monitor officers and other security staff under area of responsibility.
• Ensure medical referral is provided to all inmates when needed and to correctional employees under emergency conditions.
• Personally check all RHU max cells on a daily basis where inmates are confined and properly document.
• Ensure the RHU max maintains a high state of cleanliness and sanitation at all times.
• Be familiar with SCDC policy/procedures.
• This position is for Substantiated Security Risk (SSR) Unit.

Must successfully complete eight (8) weeks of SCDC Basic Training upon hire.

State of South Carolina Minimum Requirements:

A high school diploma and relevant experience. A bachelor’s degree in a related field may substitute for the required experience.

SCDC Minimum Requirements:

• A high school diploma and three (3) years of experience in correctional, security, military, or police work to include one (1) year of supervisory experience.
• A degree in criminal justice or a related degree may substitute for supervisory experience year for year (associate and above = 1 year).
• Must be certified by the SCDC Training Academy and successfully complete the basic supervisory course within six (6) months of entry into the position.
