Job Summary
Facilitates the delivery of quality patient care through practice as an educator and leader. The clinical educator is an expert practitioner who demonstrates departmental and unit based leadership, excellent communication skills, proficient knowledge and decision-making skills in a specialty. Clinical educators are exceptional teachers, critical thinkers and exhibit collaboration with nursing leadership, direct care nursing staff and physicians. Responsible and accountable for clinical development activities to include structured programs, in-services, patient care orientation and ongoing educational programs based on learner and organizational needs that foster the development of competence in the direct care clinical nursing staff.
Facilitates achievement of annual organizational quality goals as evidenced by patient outcomes. Provides effective training to direct care clinical nursing staff and nursing support staff for Epic EHR Inpatient Clin Doc and/or Stork.
Minimum Qualifications
Minimum Education:
Bachelors of Science in Nursing. Substitutable Education & Experience (Optional):
None. Required Certifications/Licensure:
Currently licensed as a Registered Nurse by the South Carolina Board of Nursing;
Instructor status in mandatory certification programs (CPR, ACLS, NRP, or PALS) - may be obtained within six months of entering role;
Certification in Nursing Professional Development - may be obtained within 3 years of entering role;
Epic Credentialed Trainer certification (Inpatient Clin Doc and/or Stork) - may be obtained within 6 months of entering role;
Certification in CPR. Required Training:
Experience teaching adult learners.
Essential Functions
- The Clinical Educator facilitates the direct care clinical nursing staff’s acquisition of knowledge and skills needed to provide cost-effective, quality patient care.
- Develops, coordinates, implements, evaluates and revises patient care and nursing orientation.
- Assesses, plans, implements and evaluates educational programs and activities to meet the needs of clinical nursing staff.
- Works effectively with team/work groups to accomplish organizational goals.
- Utilizes principles of Adult Learning Theory in developing educational programs.
- Demonstrates competence in critical thinking and problem solving skills to assist staff in providing care and treatment for the patient populations served.
- Effectively collaborates with learners and supervisors utilizing outcomes data to plan and present educational activities that foster competency in staff.
- Provides oversight to nursing students, nursing residents and high school health science students in their clinical rotations in patient care units.
- Facilitates orientation for clinical staff and students prior to patient care experiences.
- Promotes evidence-based nursing practice utilizing current research.
- Provides assessment and/or implementation of changes to practice, policy and procedure to improve nursing practice and patient outcomes.
- Aches and maintains a satisfactory level of technical skills and knowledge related to education technology and Epic EHR Inpatient Clin Doc and/or Stork.
- Maintains confidentiality.
- Exhibits telephone courtesy.
- Utilizes the service recovery process to resolve complaints.
- Directly influences policy, procedures, and educational strategies for unit, organization, and community.
- This role encompasses that of an educator, facilitator, project manager, consultant, change agent, and researcher.
- Serves as resource and role model for clinical nursing staff, other health care personnel and nursing students in the acquisition of knowledge and skills related to their practice.
- Assumes accountability for maintaining competencies in specialty.
