CREW LEADER – City of Kalamazoo

This position supervises crew members and participates in construction and/or maintenance work in the assigned City department; assists with or performs the work of subordinates as necessary; and performs related duties as required. The incumbent works within a general outline of work to be performed, and develops work methods and sequences under general supervision.

The work is considered medium-to-heavy in nature and involves walking, standing, stooping, lifting, digging, pushing or raising objects and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a recurring basis and 50 to 100 pounds of force on an occasional basis. The work requires the following physical abilities to perform the essential job functions: climbing, fingering, grasping, handling, hearing, kneeling, lifting, mental acuity, pulling, pushing, reaching, stooping, talking, visual acuity, and walking.

Work environment may involve exposure to bright/dim light, dust and pollen, extreme heat and/or cold, wet or humid conditions, extreme noise levels, animals/wildlife, vibration, fumes and/or noxious odors, traffic, moving machinery, electrical shock, heights, disease/pathogens, toxic/caustic chemicals; and involves critical situations that require major decisions involving people, resources, and property.

Essential Job Functions
  • Assist in coordinating and supervising the activities of an assigned City department or division.
  • Supervise subordinate crew members, including instructing, assigning, reviewing and planning work of others, maintaining standards, coordinating activities, acting on employee problems, and recommending employee discipline.
  • Review the work of subordinates for completeness and accuracy; evaluate and make recommendations as appropriate; offer training, advice and assistance as needed.
  • Supervise crew members in installation, construction, maintenance and/or repair work in assigned City department/division.
  • Inspect infrastructure, facilities and/or grounds for maintenance needs; initiate and assist in scheduling maintenance and repair work as necessary.
  • Determine the type and quantity of equipment, materials and supplies needed for assigned projects; order supplies and materials.
  • Coordinate the use of available equipment for maximum utility and convenience.
  • Coordinate and inspect the work of City work crews and contractors for compliance with applicable policies, procedures, laws, regulations, contracts, permits, and standards of quality and safety.
  • Operate trucks, light and/or heavy construction/maintenance equipment, power and hand tools as necessary.
  • Apply pesticides and perform irrigation repairs; supervise the proper maintenance of department tools and equipment.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate and complete work records and reports as required.
  • Assist in coordinating department activities and functions with those of other City divisions, departments and outside agencies as appropriate.
  • Assist crew members with and/or perform duties of crew members as necessary; perform duties of supervisor as required in his/her absence.
  • Attend staff meetings.
  • Receive and respond to inquiries, concerns, complaints and requests for assistance regarding areas of responsibility.
  • Perform general clerical work as required, which may include but is not limited to copying and filing documents, entering and retrieving computer data, answering the telephone, completing forms and reports, etc.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Three (3) years of relevant prior experience.
  • Valid South Carolina Class “D” Driver’s License.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of basic algebra involving variables and formulas and/or basic geometry involving plane and solid figures, circumferences, areas and volumes, and/or computing discounts and interest rates.
  • Ability to coordinate or determine time, place or sequence of operations or activities based on analysis of data or information and may implement and report on operations and activities.
