Position: Attorney I (#018843) Office of General Counsel, Columbia (RICHLAND)
Location: Columbia

Responsibilities

  • Handles appeals under the Administrative Procedures Act and manages the department's response.
  • Assists outside counsel in defense of civil lawsuits, including investigation and case preparation.
  • Provides legal guidance to agency employees, attorneys, court officials, and other agencies in the interpretation of state and federal laws and agency policies and procedures.
  • Assists General Counsel's Office with agency orientation and legal training.
  • Practice areas for the General Counsel's Office include constitutional law, litigation, contracts, employment law, appeals and administrative law.
  • Police Retirement Plan and Deferred Compensation Programs.
  • Public Service Loan Forgiveness.
  • Health, Dental, Vision, Long-term Disability, and Life insurance for employees, spouses, and children.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

State of South Carolina Minimum Requirements

  • A juris doctor degree or its equivalent from an accredited law school.

SCDC Minimum Requirements

  • A juris doctor degree or its equivalent from an accredited law school.
  • Membership in the South Carolina bar and completion of Rule 403 requirements within six (6) months of employment.
