Job Responsibilities
Two (2) Positions Available
The Agency's mission is to be boldly innovative in improving the health and quality of life for South Carolinians.
This is position is located in General Counsel, Richland County.

Are you the One? We are looking for an Attorney I who provides legal opinions and advice to the Department, as well as representing the Department in matters in a
variety of venues.
  • Provide clear and accurate, well-considered legal opinions to administrative and program staff in the interpretation of Department policies as they relate to state and federal laws and regulations and recommends appropriate actions.
  • Represents the Department in a variety of administrative hearings and other venues at the trial and appellate levels, as necessary, involving Department matters. This representation includes all facets of litigation practice including, but not limited to, working with Department staff, composing legal arguments, preparing witnesses, handling settlement discussions/mediations or other negotiations, preparing all litigation documents for court filings, appearing in hearings/court proceedings.
  • Review a variety of legal documents, including trusts, contracts, authorized representative documents (e.g., powers of attorney, healthcare powers of attorney, custody documents), estate recovery documents (e.g., creditor's claim, petition for allowance, inventory and appraisement), and other types of legal documents as necessary. Prepare and draft a variety of legal documents to include contracts and litigation documents (e.g., pleadings, briefs, motions, discovery, orders).
  • Communicate professionally and effectively with Department staff, colleagues, opposing counsel and all other individuals in the course of Department business. Conduct yourself in accordance with the highest ethical standards and professional integrity and maintain attorney-client privilege in Department matters.
  • Stay current on all laws, regulations, and legal precedents relevant to the Department's mission. Perform any other duties for the betterment of the Department, as assigned.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

A Juris Doctor Degree or its equivalent from an accredited law school.

Special Requirements: Member of the South Carolina Bar. Completed all Rule 403 requirements.

Additional Requirements:
  • Occasional overnight travel.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Overtime and/or weekend work with Deputy approval.
  • Sitting or standing for long periods of time.
  • This is an in-person position.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to interpret and apply laws and judicial decisions.
