Job Summary

The Central Office (CO) Technician / NOC Tech is responsible for the installation, maintenance, testing, and troubleshooting of telecommunications equipment within a central office and remote cabinet environment. This role supports critical voice, data, and transport networks by ensuring systems operate reliably, efficiently, and in compliance with industry and safety standards.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Install, provision, and maintain central office equipment, including switches, routers, Access gear, optical transport systems, and power systems

• Terminate DC power, rectifiers, PDUs, BDFB/BDCBBs, inverters, converters, and associated infrastructure used in telecommunications networks

• Ensures functionality of newly installed central office equipment by performing acceptance tests as appropriate.

• Perform routine inspections of central office facilities, cabling and power connections.

• Support scheduled maintenance windows and emergency repairs, including after-hours or on-call work

• Coordinate with network engineers, OSP/other field technicians, and vendors to resolve issues and complete projects

• Perform site surveys for special service customer installs.

• Complete detailed documents of work performed and provide daily status updates

• Ensure compliance with safety regulations, company procedures, and telecom standards (NEC, OSHA, GR-standards)

• Performs all other related duties as assigned by management.

Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities

• Read, analyze, and interpret detailed specifications and drawings, blueprints, schematics, and method of procedures (MOPs)

• Knowledge of central office equipment.

• Knowledge of electronics and circuitry AC/DC as well as Low Voltage

• Knowledge of digital switching technology.

• Knowledge of telecommunications industry.

• Knowledge of digital switching technology.

• Knowledge of company products and services.

• Knowledge of industry regulations, and safety requirements.

• Knowledge and experience with transport and Access equipment including Ciena DWDM, Fujitsu, Cisco, Calix, Adtran, Nortel, Nokia, etc.

• Strong technical and trouble-shooting skills.

• Skill in installing, maintaining and repairing central office switching and related equipment.

• Skill in analytical thinking and problem solving.

• Skill in mechanical aptitude including usage of basic power tools.

• Skill in fiber optic cable and AC/DC power installation and testing practices

• Ability to pay close attention to detail.

• Ability to evaluate, test and repair sophisticated equipment.

• Ability to improve or redesign procedures for specific installation/repair problems.

• Ability to work independently and make sound technical decisions using information at hand.

• Ability to communicate with co-workers and various business contacts in a professional and courteous manner.

Education and Experience

Minimum Requirements:

High school diploma or equivalent and valid driver's license. 2+ years of experience in central office/plant operations required.

Preferred Requirements:
Associate or bachelor's degree with specialized training in electronics, mechatronics, computer science or other fields of technology. A+ and or Net Plus, Cisco CCNA, or other Networking Certifications.

Experience with IP Technology, Ethernet Circuitry, and HVAC Experience a plus

• Ability to work outdoors in extreme weather conditions.

• Ability to move around various job sites and terrain conditions.

• Ability to operate computer, office equipment, and test equipment.

• Ability to work in tight spaces while bending, twisting, and reaching.

• Ability to lift and carry tools and equipment up to 40 pounds.

• Ability to communicate and collaborate with coworkers virtually, face-to-face, and over the phone.

• Occasional overnight travel may be required.

• Ability to work an on-call schedule rotation as well as normal business hours, evenings, weekends, and holidays as required.
