Key Responsibilities- Monitor Cardiac Rhythms:
Watch cardiac monitors continuously to observe patients’ heart rhythms and detect any irregularities or abnormalities. - Recognize Alarms:
Quickly recognize and respond to monitor alarms indicating changes in heart rate, rhythm, or other cardiac parameters. - Notify Healthcare Team:
Alert nurses, physicians, or other healthcare providers immediately when abnormal rhythms or significant changes in patient status are detected. - Document Observations:
Record and document cardiac rhythms, alarm events, and interventions accurately and in a timely manner in the patient’s medical records. - Maintain Equipment:
Ensure proper functioning of cardiac monitoring equipment by performing regular checks, troubleshooting technical issues, and reporting malfunctions promptly. - Communicate Effectively:
Communicate clearly and effectively with members of the healthcare team, providing concise and accurate information about patients’ cardiac status. - Patient Advocacy:
Advocate for patient safety and well-being by promptly addressing any concerns or issues related to cardiac monitoring and reporting them to the appropriate personnel. - Collaborate with Team:
Collaborate with nurses, physicians, and other healthcare professionals to coordinate patient care and facilitate timely interventions as needed. - Follow Protocols:
Adhere to hospital policies, procedures, and protocols related to cardiac monitoring, patient safety, and confidentiality.
- High school diploma or equivalent required; additional education or certification in cardiac monitoring or healthcare-related field preferred.
- Previous experience as a Monitor Tech or similar role in a healthcare setting is advantageous.
- Familiarity with cardiac rhythms and ability to recognize common arrhythmias is highly desirable.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to focus for extended periods while monitoring multiple patients simultaneously.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact professionally with patients and healthcare team members.
- Ability to remain calm and composed in high-pressure situations and respond quickly to emergent situations.
- Basic computer skills for data entry and documentation purposes.
- Ability to sit for extended periods while monitoring cardiac monitors and performing related tasks.
- Manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination to operate monitor controls and navigate computer systems.
- Visual acuity to accurately read and interpret cardiac rhythms displayed on monitors.
- Emotional resilience and ability to cope with stress and uncertainty inherent in healthcare environments.
Job Description
Minimum Requirements:
At least 1 year in a .6 FTE or greater Monitor Technician I position at MUSC or 1 year of Monitor Technician/Telemetry work experience in a health care facility and successful completion of the EKG training/competency during the orientation period in order to remain in the Monitor Technician II position.
