About the Role

The Town of Mooresville is seeking a Traffic Crash Investigator to perform a variety of public safety and administrative duties related to the investigation of minor motor vehicle collisions. This position focuses on responding to crash scenes, completing North Carolina DMV-349 crash reports, managing traffic flow, and supporting Police Department operations.

The Traffic Crash Investigator works in outdoor environments and around active traffic, requiring sound judgment, attention to safety, and adherence to departmental procedures. This role provides an important service by ensuring accurate crash documentation, efficient scene management, and timely assistance to motorists, while supporting sworn officers and emergency responders.

Responsibilities
  • Investigate minor traffic collisions and complete State of North Carolina DMV-349 crash reports.
  • Respond to dispatched assignments and provide traffic control and crowd management at accident scenes, road closures, and other hazardous conditions.
  • Initiate appropriate assistance at crash scenes, including requesting wreckers, ambulances, fire personnel, and law enforcement.
  • Assist disabled motorists and coordinate the removal of abandoned or obstructing vehicles.
  • Report crimes in progress to the communications center without becoming personally involved.
  • Deploy and retrieve traffic cones, barricades, and other equipment to control traffic and crowds.
  • Enter and retrieve data using computer systems to check license plate and driver’s license information.
  • Maintain assigned vehicles, equipment, and supplies to ensure readiness and proper working order.
  • Provide administrative and operational support to the Police Department.
  • Testify in court as required.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED and three years of security or law enforcement experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Requirements
  • Must be at least 18 years old and a United States citizen.
  • Eligible for Department of Criminal Investigations (DCI) certification.
  • Possession of a valid North Carolina driver’s license.
