Overview
Be part of a mission-driven team working to improve outcomes for children across South Carolina. The Legislative Coordinator supports policy development, legislative research, and public engagement in a dynamic committee setting. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys learning, problem-solving, and contributing to work that has real statewide impact.
Responsibilities- Tracks child-related legislation and coordinates staff coverage of legislative meetings and hearings. Ensures meeting summaries are prepared and entered into the database and manages the Committee’s legislative compendium.
- Reviews all child-related bills filed each session to identify proposals that may impact children in South Carolina and to determine when Committee engagement or action may be warranted. Updates and maintains the compendium of tracked legislation; monitors hearings, subcommittee meetings, and legislative calendars; and coordinates staff coverage to ensure that all relevant proceedings are summarized and documented. Prepares one-pagers, briefing packets, and supportive materials for Committee members, and communicates with stakeholders regarding hearings.
- Researches policy issues affecting children and drafts fact sheets and policy summaries for Committee members; serves as part of the drafting team for the Annual Report.
- Coordinates annual statewide public hearings, including scheduling, logistics, community outreach, and preparation of the final summary report. Responds to requests for information from stakeholders and the public. Manages all aspects of the Committee’s annual public hearings by selecting and securing venues, coordinating dates with Committee members, planning parking and accessibility needs, and ensuring all logistical considerations are addressed. Conducts targeted community outreach to ensure diverse participation and summarizes public input to guide policy discussions.
- Coordinates materials for the Committee’s website and develops a social media plan for communicating Committee activities. Maintains and updates the Committee’s website and develops a nonpartisan social-media plan to increase public awareness of issues affecting children, ensuring content accuracy and accessibility.
- Assists the Senior Resource Attorney in analyzing proposed legislation, reviewing data trends, drafting policy language, and developing policy initiatives. Prepares clear summaries and recommendations for Committee consideration to support timely decision-making.
- Assists with Committee meeting preparation and participates in meetings, providing information as requested. Oversees the work of law clerks, student interns, and externs, including supervision and ensuring quality and timeliness of deliverables.
- Job Related Minimum Required Education And Experience: Requires a bachelor’s degree in a job-related field and 2 or more years of job-related experience, which may be substituted by an equivalent combination of job-related certification, training, education, and/or experience.
- Preferred Qualifications: Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited university strongly preferred; a master’s degree in public policy, public administration, social work, or a closely related field will also be considered beneficial. Ideal candidates will have experience researching policy issues, analyzing legislation, and preparing written reports or policy briefs. Preference for at least two years of experience staffing a legislative committee or coordinating public hearings, meetings, or other public-facing events.
Additional preference for knowledge of children’s policy issues and state government functions. Experience with desktop publishing, website content management, and/or social media planning is highly desirable.
- Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: Ability to work effectively with Joint Committee members and other elected and appointed officials. Ability to analyze issues and project policy impact. Excellent computer and communication skills (written and oral). Highly organized and detail-oriented.
