Job Summary

An OSP (Outside Plant) Engineer is responsible for designing, constructing, and maintaining telecommunications infrastructure, including fiber optic networks.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Create detailed engineering plans for telecommunications infrastructure, including fiber optic networks. Assess project requirements and develop designs that meet industry standards.
  • Oversee the installation of cables, conduits, and other equipment necessary for network connectivity, ensuring that projects are completed on time and within budget.
  • Oversee maintenance of existing infrastructure, troubleshooting issues, and providing immediate assistance during emergencies.
  • Maintain accurate records of installations, modifications, and maintenance activities, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Works closely with project managers, field technicians, and other teams to ensure effective communication and project execution.
  • Responsible for negotiation and securing landowner’s right of way consent for company construction projects.
  • Complete and file appropriate paperwork and easements.
  • Research property titles, property lines and existing easements as needed.
  • Monitor construction projects to ensure projects stay on budget, and upon project completion they ensure GIS data is updated and accurate.
  • Collect raw data including any pedestals, poles, conflicting utility facilities with a GPS receiver, documents, then export information into the GIS/CADD software.
  • Performs all other related duties as assigned by management.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of fiber optic telecommunication construction, network design principles, and cable installation practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of state and federal safety regulations.
  • Knowledge of RUS practices and standards.
  • Knowledge of company products and services.
  • Skill in managing multiple projects and meeting deadlines.
  • Ability to communicate with co-workers and various business contacts in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as maps, staking sheets, and operating and maintenance instruction manuals.
  • Ability to pay close attention to detail.
  • Ability to effectively function as a team player.
  • Ability to work overtime when required/scheduled. Overtime and callback work will be necessary on occasion.
Education and Experience

Minimum Requirements:

Valid driver’s license required. High School diploma or equivalent plus one to three years of technical training.

Preferred Qualifications:

Previous facility maintenance experience.

Working Conditions &

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to work outdoors in extreme weather conditions.
  • Ability to work during normal business hours, evenings, weekends, and holidays as required.
  • Must be able to sit for extended periods, enter and exit the vehicle multiple times per day while traveling to various work sites.
  • Ability to move about work sites of all sizes to develop a plan.
  • Ability to stoop, kneel, and crawl to perform locates.
  • Must be able to read system maps.
  • Ability to communicate and collaborate with coworkers and various business partners virtually, face-to-face, and over the phone regarding service request.
  • Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to operate locate equipment.
  • Must be able to operate computer and software systems.
