Job Responsibilities
This posting will be used to fill multiple summer internship positions in the Department of Transportation District Four offices located in Cherokee, Chester, Chesterfield, Fairfield, Lancaster, Union, and York counties. Assist in engineering activities in the Maintenance, Construction, Bridge, and/or Traffic Engineering fields.
- Maintenance: Conduct inspections on contractors (mowing, grading, vegetation, installing traffic markings, etc.). Work directly with crews to obtain quantities for drainage, paving, and bridge repairs. Work with permit technician on driveway and utility permits. Inspect placement of pavement markings.
- Construction: Assist a certified engineering technician in performing inspection of contractors' work to ensure that materials and workmanship are all in accordance with plans and specifications. This includes asphalt, bridge, paving, earthwork, and concrete work.
- Bridge: Inspect timber components for decay, splits, bearing, etc.; inspect concrete components for spalls, delamination, etc.; inspect steel components for corrosion, section loss, cracks, etc. Review previous bridge reports before an inspection. Work directly with crews to perform bridge maintenance activities such as establishing grade for pile caps and pile cutoffs, placing/screeding concrete, tying reinforcing steel, cutting lumber, sanding/grinding steel beams/bearings/rebar, and drilling/anchoring concrete anchors to attach steel beams.
Train to make full penetration groove welds horizontal, vertical, and overhead. - Traffic: Conduct traffic studies by installing equipment, performing traffic counts, and analyzing data. Perform CADD work by creating and revising traffic plans and detour routes. Learn traffic signal design from the beginning to end of projects.
Pay rate is between $17.00 - $23.00 per hour depending on qualifications.
Minimum and Additional Requirements- A high school diploma or an approved acceptable equivalence.
- Accepted into or currently enrolled in a two‑year college or university program in Engineering, Engineering Technology, or Construction Science and Management.
- A motor vehicle operator's license is required.
The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve sitting or standing at a desk for extended periods of time. This position may require occasional travel. This position may require bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, and kneeling. This position requires driving and walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and natural environmental hazards.
Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. May be required to work outside of the normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental‑related emergencies. This position may be exposed to the outside environment in all weather conditions and noise.
