Job Responsibilities
** This posting will be used to fill multiple summer internship positions in the Department of Transportation Headquarters building within Bridge Management Office, Office of Engineering Support, Office of Alternative Delivery, Traffic Engineering, Pre-Construction Engineering, Road Maintenance Engineering, Right of Way Office, and Capital Improvements. *
* The following is a brief description of each area responsibilities:
Bridge Management Office: Within the Bridge Management Office, responsibilities include: field visits to inspect existing bridges to determine dimensions, deterioration, and maintenance needs. Upon evaluation, log findings into appropriate software, research existing plan files, determine scope of work that needs to be performed, and use microstation to assist with developing repair plans. Review oversize and overweight loads to ensure existing bridges are capable of withstanding the loads.
Use excel and other computer programs to process large amounts of bridge data including, vlookups, queries and developing reports on closed and load restricted bridges for management. Assist with updating bridge standards and policies.
Office of Engineering Support:Obtains general exposure to design manuals and policies related to geotechnical, hydrology, roadway, and structural design. Provides general assistance to review design plans for compliance with engineering requirements. Obtains general exposure to engineering software and the Department's letting process. Perform site visits to evaluate project locations.
Office of Alternative Delivery: Assists with some of the largest and most complex infrastructure projects in South Carolina, gaining hands-on experience with the design-build project delivery method. Collaborates with and supports subject matter experts in Preconstruction and Construction Project Management, Roadway, Structures, Hydraulics, and Geotechnical design disciplines. Participates in meetings, presentations, site visits to active construction sites, as well as coordinating with various divisions across SCDOT including Right of Way, Environmental, and Traffic Engineering.
Researches solutions to organizational, administrative, and design/construction challenges identified by the Office of Alternative Delivery (OAD) and leverage SCDOT's expertise and resources to develop actionable implementation plans based on their findings.
Office of Traffic Engineering: Within the Traffic Safety Group, the responsibilities include:
General exposure to safety project development to include project management, design, plan preparation, field visits, coordination with other areas of DOT, and public meeting attendance. Within the Traffic Safety Data group, the responsibilities include: crash data collection, crash diagram development, collision report analyses, and field reviews. Within the Work Zone Traffic Control group, the responsibilities include: traffic control (maintenance of traffic) plan design, consultant traffic control plan review, traffic control alternatives analyses review, policy development, coordination with other areas of DOT to include Alternative Delivery, Bridge Management, Maintenance, Preconstruction, and District offices, and participating in traffic control field reviews of active construction and maintenance projects.
These areas may also have limited exposure to other areas of Traffic Engineering to include Traffic Signals, Highway-Rail Grade Crossings, Intelligent Transportation Systems (particularly for Work Zones),…
