Position OverviewThe Joint Class Size Assessment Council (JCSAC) allocates Class‑Size Teacher Assistant positions to address oversized classrooms in Priority Schools and other impacted schools. These positions are reviewed annually and concluded at the end of each school year. Under the general direction of the school principal and the immediate supervision of a teaching teacher, the position assists in the instruction of pupils and performs related duties as required.
Responsibilities- Supervise students during lunchroom and playground activities.
- Perform security functions such as monitoring corridors and reviewing student identification cards.
- Assist students in understanding and completing classroom assignments.
- Assist teachers in preparing bulletin boards and displaying students’ work in classrooms.
- Operate photocopying and duplicating machines to reproduce educational materials.
- Maintain the orderly arrangement of classrooms.
- Greet and direct visitors to appropriate areas of the school.
- Consult with teachers regarding concerns of individual students.
- Operate audiovisual equipment such as movie projectors, tape recorders, and photographs.
- Provide tutoring services to students under teacher supervision.
- Collect and grade students’ homework assignments and examination materials under teacher supervision.
- Assist in supervising the loading and unloading of students on school buses.
- Assist in receipt processing and insurance of school books under teacher supervision.
- Collect daily classroom absentee reports and contact parents or guardians to verify causes of absence.
- Assist elementary school teachers with wrap‑up activities and toilet supervision as necessary.
- Assist in supervising school procedures related to the sale of public transportation passes to students.
Education Requirements
- High school graduation or G.E.D. equivalent.
Certification Requirements
- Valid TASN (NCLB) paraprofessional license from the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE).
- License may be obtained after completing at least 60 semester hours of college credit at an accredited institution or passing a paraprofessional exam (Work Keys or Parapro).
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Good knowledge of English grammar and spelling; basic knowledge of mathematics.
- Familiarity with Chicago Public Schools rules and regulations.
- Ability to work with and for school‑aged children, follow written and oral instructions, operate basic office equipment, and communicate effectively with the public.
- Strong oral and written communication and reading skills; experience with audio‑visual equipment and personal computers is desirable.
Physical Requirements
Light work:
May exert up to twenty (20) pounds of force occasionally or up to ten (10) pounds frequently; involves walking or standing for significant periods or sitting primarily with occasional arm control.
- Establish and maintain Chicago residency within six months of hire and for the duration of employment.
- Complete the Class Size Teacher Assistant – Interim Assignment Acceptance Form.
- Be fully vaccinated or submit to weekly COVID‑19 testing.
