Overview

The University of South Carolina (USC) invites nominations, inquiries, and applications for the position of Dean, School of Medicine, Columbia. USC seeks an exceptional leader to provide direction for the School of Medicine as it expands its footprint on the Health Sciences Campus in Columbia, S.C. USC’s School of Medicine Columbia serves the people of South Carolina and beyond through exemplary biomedical education, transformative research, and compassionate care for all.

The School of Medicine has served the community for nearly 50 years and is a premier part of USC, training physicians, health care professionals, and scientists, while supporting the growing health needs of South Carolinians. Educational programs at the School of Medicine take full advantage of USC’s status as the state’s only Tier 1 research (R1) institution. Students receive leading-edge medical education from a school where interdisciplinary research and quality patient care training help guide the next generation of health care professionals.

On February 25, 2025, USC broke ground on a Health Sciences Campus that will redefine the future of health care education and research. The cutting-edge facility will be part of USC’s transformative $300+ million Health Sciences Campus, amid 16 acres in the Bull Street District of Columbia.

The dean is the chief academic and administrative officer of the School of Medicine (SOMC) and is a key member of USC’s academic leadership team. The dean oversees all aspects of the academic mission and pursues the school’s strategic priorities to fulfill its mission into the future. Specific responsibilities include:

• Provide strategic leadership to the medical school, enhance research, and build and maintain partnerships.
• Ensure accreditation readiness and compliance; understand allied health programs and translational research.
• Oversee academic programs, faculty development, and overall operational effectiveness.
• Coordinate with USC leadership to advance the school’s mission within the Health Sciences Campus and broader university goals.

The ideal candidate will have:

• An M.D. degree and a strong research portfolio.
• The ability to secure tenure at the rank of full professor.
• At least 7 years of progressive administrative experience.
• Potential for a clinical appointment in the Prisma Health Center.
