Instructional Assistant – Special Education (CC2)

Position SummaryUnder general supervision, a close‑assisting role working with students identified as disabled under IDEA. Provides physical, emotional, and academic support to enable maximum benefit from special education programs, and assists teachers with classroom activities.
Required Education & Experience- High school graduate or equivalent.
- At least two years of study (60 semester hours) at an accredited institution of higher education; or
- An associate’s degree (or higher); or
- A passing score on the Para Pro or Para Pathways Assessment.
- Current government‑issued identification.
8 hours per day, 185 days per school year. Non‑Exempt (FLSA).
Essential Functions- Supports the mission, vision, and strategic goals of Lexington County School District One.
- Communicates and collaborates with all stakeholders effectively.
- Creates a safe, supportive, positive, and productive learning environment.
- Operates general office and technology equipment needed for daily activities.
- Maintains confidentiality regarding all employee and student information.
- Participates in all professional meetings and training sessions as required.
- Requests and maintains materials needed for daily responsibilities; ensures safe storage.
- Assists teacher with primary academic instruction and classroom activities.
- Assists with physical health programs, daily living routines, speech therapy lessons.
- Adjusts special equipment and monitors student equipment functioning.
- Maintains classroom neatness and orderly conditions.
- Provides basic first aid to students.
- Assists with computer instruction; operates computing devices and software for information management.
- Performs errands and tasks for students (e.g., sharpening pencils, carrying lunch).
- Accompanies students to activities in and out of the school building.
- Uses personal devices and software applications for communication and information management.
- Performs other job‑related duties as assigned.
Supervises students in classrooms, labs, and other instructional areas as assigned.

- Appropriate maintenance, safe operation, and utilization of equipment and supplies.
- High standards of accuracy and confidentiality of records.
- Effective communication with supervisors, co‑workers, teachers, students, and the public.
- Computer literacy; knowledge of word processing, email, spreadsheets, and presentation software.
- Organize flexible work schedules to meet deadlines; self‑monitor multiple tasks.
May occasionally lift or move up to 50 pounds; push/pull items such as furniture. Requires standing, walking, frequent use of computer monitor. Some extended hours.
Work EnvironmentPrimarily classroom setting with minimal exposure to adverse environmental conditions. Requires constant attention while interacting with students and adults. Occasional travel; no overnight travel.
EvaluationPerformance is evaluated annually according to Board Policy.
