Under limited supervision, the Carolina
CAP Instructional Coach provides direct coaching, support, and professional development for teacher candidates enrolled in the Carolina Collaborative for Alternative Preparation (Carolina
CAP) program. This position works collaboratively with school leadership, mentor teachers, and Human Resources to ensure candidates grow in their instructional practice, meet certification requirements, and positively impact student learning. The coach supports candidate success through observation, feedback, training, and mentoring aligned with state standards and best practices for new teacher development.
- Minimum of four (4) years of successful classroom teaching experience.
- Bachelor’s degree in Education, Curriculum & Instruction, or related field.
- Previous experience mentoring or coaching novice teachers preferred.
- Understanding of adult learning theory, instructional frameworks, and coaching methodologies.
- Knowledge of South Carolina teaching standards and the Carolina
CAP program model is highly desirable.
- Provides one-on-one and small group instructional coaching to Carolina
CAP teacher candidates to improve planning, instruction, assessment, and classroom management practices. - Conducts regular observations and provides timely, actionable feedback grounded in district frameworks and state educator effectiveness standards.
- Collaborates with principals, mentor teachers, and district leadership to ensure aligned support for candidates.
- Supports the development, implementation, and monitoring of individualized growth plans for candidates based on observation data and student learning needs.
- Plans and facilitates professional learning experiences that support the competencies of effective teaching and Carolina
CAP program requirements. - Maintains accurate coaching logs, observation notes, candidate progress reports, and other required documentation.
- Participates in candidate onboarding, orientation, and induction processes.
- Assists in planning and delivering Carolina
CAP seminars, reflection sessions, and competency-based check-ins. - Provides guidance on instructional strategies, culturally relevant pedagogy, and curriculum alignment.
- Stays current on trends and research in teacher development, adult learning, and alternative certification.
- Ensures Carolina
CAP candidates understand and comply with district, state, and program policies and expectations. - Engages in continuous improvement by analyzing candidate data, reflecting on coaching practice, and collaborating with the Carolina
CAP network. - Supports other duties related to candidate success and teacher preparation as assigned.

Physical Requirements
- Must be able to travel between school sites and attend in-person observations and meetings.
- Requires the ability to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods and lift up to 20 pounds occasionally.
- Must be able to operate a computer and standard office equipment.
