The purpose of this classification is to perform routine clerical and cashier tasks to collect tax payments, assist taxpayers, and provide support with the daily operations of the office. Reports to the Tax Collector.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS The duties are as follows for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.
- Performs routine cashier duties and customer service tasks to assist taxpayers in the County; receives payments; provides information and answers to routine questions.
- Performs clerical tasks to support daily office operations; prepares files; completes bank deposits; receives incoming & outgoing calls that provide information and assistance to the public pertaining to South Carolina Code of Laws on taxation.
- Prepares and forwards mortgages, liens, judgments and probates letters to defaulting taxpayers. Receives, dates and distributes incoming mail; prepares outgoing mail.
- Enforces South Carolina Code of Laws Title 12 for taxation.
- Creates and maintains tax sale files which generates tax sale letters on a quarterly basis. Updates address corrections on delinquent files.
- Operates a personal computer and general office equipment as necessary to complete essential functions, to include the use of word processing, spreadsheets, database, or other system software; prepares forms, documents and correspondence.
- Works closely with Auditor's Office, Treasurer's Office, & Tax Assessor's Office.
High school diploma or GED; supplemented by one year of clerical experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
PHYSICAL DEMANDSTasks require the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of light weight (5-10 pounds). Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or work station.
WORK CONDITIONSThe work is regularly performed in a relatively safe and secure working environment. Standard operating hours are Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with the ability to work after hours when necessary. Scheduled hours/days, job location, duties and any other information contained herein are subject to changes. May be required to work extra hours and to perform extra or different duties during emergency situations.
COMPENSATIONThe starting annual salary for the Tax Clerk for the Tax Collector’s Office will be market competitive depending upon the qualifications and experience of the selected candidate. An excellent fringe benefit plan will be provided. This position is unclassified and reports to the Tax Collector.
