The Project Lead is responsible for coordinating and managing the field execution of projects, working closely with design and management teams to support designs, assemble the best team, determine an optimal work plan, procure all necessary materials and subcontractors, and complete the physical build. This role ensures projects are completed to an exceptional level of quality and professionalism while driving a safe, productive and fun work environment on the project sites.
Working closely with clients, the SHIFT team, vendors, subcontractors and other stakeholders, the Project Lead sees projects completed with integrity, collaboration, transparency, and trust.
- Lead the on-site construction process in a client-facing role from construction start through final commissioning, including knowledge and information transfer to client stakeholders.
- Prepare realistic construction schedules at monthly, weekly and daily levels, continuously updating them as the project(s) progress.
- Track and manage attendance by other SHIFT builders and subcontractors.
- Collaborate with internal and external design teams to ensure the builds are completed in accordance with contract plans and intents, while continuously exploring ideas to increase quality and efficiency, lower costs, and ensure the safety of all those around the job sites.
- Partner closely with the project team to ensure clear communication, alignment, and transparency at every stage of the project.
- Lead physical build tasks by providing hands-on leadership and direction to all builders on the project including framing, doors & windows, trims, flooring, wall finishes, and other general carpentry tasks.
- Mentor less experienced builders and help drive positive development while upholding SHIFT’s culture of respect, transparency and teamwork.
- Champion sustainability, resilience, equity, and long-term relationships with all those involved with the project.
- 3+ years of hands-on building experience in carpentry or similar trade.
- Higher education or training in Architecture, Construction Management, Engineering, or related fields is a plus.
- Proven ability to rethink conventional practices to reduce costs, accelerate timelines, or improve user experiences.
- Ability to read and follow construction drawings, specifications and design models.
- Computer software skills including word processing, spreadsheets, and PDF editing, and with the ability to learn new programs quickly.
- Excellent communication and facilitation skills, with the ability to align diverse stakeholders around a shared vision.
- Passion for impact-driven work in areas such as affordable housing, healthcare, education, and community infrastructure.

- Prolonged periods of lifting, standing and moving around job sites.
- Must be able to safely navigate a job-site, climb ladders and scaffolding, and operate carpentry tools and basic machinery safely.
- Ability to use hands and fingers to operate power tools, computer keyboard, and office equipment.
- Must be able to communicate clearly and effectively in person, over the phone, and in writing.
- Ability to safely navigate active construction sites, including prolonged walking on uneven terrain, climbing stairs, and wearing required personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Must be able to lift up to 75 pounds (e.g., tools, materials).
